How i saved my roots. a bad long winded story of newb mistakes and s***y grow journal

TL;DR scroll for pics. orange text is a short description of pics. ~2-3 weeks of fresh roots after getting root rot and almost killing a baby tokandsmoke. also my mini dwc build that saved mr. tokandsmoke.

So, to begin this story, i have 3 plants in a dwc system that i built as a way to introduce myself to growing now that its legal in california. I chose this method as dwc has the highest level of control and is one of the cheapest methods to build.

I started my first plant in an aerogarden.:dunce: it was one of 6 attempts at starting from seed. mind you, i grew in soil about 10 years ago and had decent success indoor. i also had about 50 seeds left over that i started with(sour D/white widow... or s.d. northern lights? cant remember. we will just call them tokandsmoke) that are 10+ years old. im having about an 80% success rate on sprouting. seeds are natural though. not feminized. a buddy in Humboldt bred them for me.

so the early seeds were dying and the strongest one survived. the aerogarden doesn't have high enough DO levels and my testing/monitoring equipment was garbage so my ppm was off.:cuss: it is about one to two weeks older than the two partners sharing the tent in dwc. (seedsman skunk #1 fem freebies)

so, the plan was to use the aerogarden to sprout and grow till about 5" then transplant into the dwc/tent.

so i tossed the aerogarden idea as it was a bad one. and tossed 2 seeds in rockwool (skunk #1) and put them strait into the hydroton. BAM!!! 100% success rate. :-o

the last pic was taken on the first day of training which i found out was perhaps too early and may have been one of the causes of stress that lead to the rot. I also want to mention that most of the leaves in this pic died and were pruned.

then mr. tokandsmoke started turning yellow and drooping so i pulled the plant from the hydroton and found brown jellied roots. :wall:

this pic is after i started using bennies, but it is the only pic i took of my dying plant. at the time of this pic it had perhaps a half dozen white roots showing from the plug and reaching maybe 3" exposed. less than an inch from the end of the plug

it is also a good pic of the mini dwc in action. im actually going to move it to the kitchen as its a lowrider #2 and i want a mini auto that will be the only "show off" plant for visitors.(wont care as much if they infect it) the rest are stuffed in my bedroom closet discretely vibrating away in a borderline sterile environment..

f**k. now what?:?: ok, so head over to google and start searching. root rot. f**k. keep seeing posts that state the plant will not recover. toss it and start over.:cuss:f**k that, im going to master growing and need to learn to fix/prevent any potential problem.:fire:

i found about 50 different methods for fixing root rot. but one thing most had in common is bennies and h2o2. the h2o2 is a temporary fix though.

https://www.rollitup.org/t/dwc-root-slime-cure-aka-how-to-breed-beneficial-microbes.361430/

>>>>> time to make a way to fix root rot by combining all the research i did. h2o2 flush to clean the roots while i breed bennies. use a small container and your usual nutes with ph adjusted distilled water @.7 150-200 ppm then add 1 teaspoon per quart of 35% h2o2. needs high DO to keep the roots as healthy as possible. also needs CALiMAGic.(didnt know that at the time) replace the water at least twice a day and rinse the roots with fast flowing water. this will wash away dead roots and flush off the killer microbes that are potentially still breeding.<<<<

if you should take anything from this, its right here^^^^

so i couldnt find anything local and went strait to amazon and picked up some subculture m/b and some molasses. as it was the only thing available with prime 1-2 day shipping.

tell me i cant save the plant...

the mini dwc. a great setup for smaller plants. perhaps the main reason mr. tokandsmoke survived. it has a lowrider #2 that im using as a test. if it works out i may make more for FOG grows..

it took about 5 days total to get and breed the bennies. after that i tossed the mix in a dwc with prepped nutes and fresh hydroton. mind you i had to trim off all the dead roots so the current roots are brand new.

BAM!!!!! look at those roots. after the trim there were a small number of fresh roots showing from the plug. damn thing went crazy and put tons of energy into pumping them roots out.

took this today. you can see the spots that i believe are caused by a lack of cal/mag because i was using distilled water. they stopped when i started adding CALiMAGic.

if you read everything, thank you.

if you notice from the pics, i have been changing my methods to decrease temps. once the temps went down enough, i kicked up the light. growth has been noticeably faster since.
