how fast do the pistils change color?

like say a pistil is white and curled it will start to orange at the tips eventually. how long will it take to go from that state to completely orange?

trying to run a 72 hour darkness period before harvest to experiment. im going to be looking at trichomes on wednesday when my microscope comes in. right now i'd say about 30-40% are orange maybe 5-10% are white and straight the rest is all white and curled and some are starting to change orange already.

just based on pistil colors i predict i got until sunday possibly to harvest at the least. i dont think these girls will make 2 weeks though.

the tops are mostly orange but the buds under it and lower are mostly all yellow and curled.

you think it is too late to try the dark period? i mean i don't really have to tbh just wanted to experiment but i got another grow working that i can do it on if anything.

You have 10-20 days left on that plant. The stigma aren't receeded and the bracts havn't swollen up yet so there is no point in looking at trichomes yet. Most plants will follow a pretty typical pattern.

The stigma will typically turn and receed, and the buds will stop growing physically larger. THEN the bracts will begin to swell internally. At this stage the buds will pack on more weight, I've watched buds bend over sturdy branches in a matter of 2-3 days from the extra weight. This is also the period when the plants actually ripen. Once you see the bracts swell into fat little bulbs, check the trichomes :).

Harvesting early is the biggest mistake new growers make! I did it when I was new because I didn't know better, and I've done it since for other reasons. However I try my best to help new growers dodge this mistake if I can. Unless you need to cut a plant early it is NOT worth it!

by the bracts your talking about the seed pouches right? and what do you meen by receed? like the orange hairs will likelly go back into the pouches? if i got 10-20 lefts then thats good cause i still need to flush um XD

"Bracts" is the correct term for what most people refer to as calyxs. I only learned this a few months ago after many years of using the wrong term so don't feel bad. The stigma(pistils) won't go back in per say, but they will "shrivel up" some. I am not going to say that you can't have any white stigma at harvest, but most plants should not have many if any when they are properly matured.

As far as harvest flushing goes, I tell everyone to try it themselves.

I've tried it many times with different strains, and never saw any benefit from it. Once you learn to grow, and dry properly you realize flushing doesn't make much sense. Its completely unfounded scientifically, and is something that weed growers came up with to try to fix their fuck ups even though it doesn't actually work.

There are times during a grow when you might flush the medium to remove salts from the medium so that you can correct an issue. But your not removing anything from the plant in that case your just fixing your medium.

Your plant doesn't look overfed, so I wouldn't see any reason to flush it. I don't like to starve my plants when they are trying their best to fatten up and put on weight.

thanks yea everyone says to flush for chemical taste. i'll try it your way and continue to feed. i mean really to me it doesn't even matter im sure i will fuck something up or already have. in flowering i didn't feed a lot since they outdoors but i fed more then my first grow which had no nutrients during flowering. in veg i over fed. most of the leaves are pretty much gone died from aphids or w.e. mostly the aphids though but now i see very little aphids on the plants.

and yea i only learned about bracts like 2 days ago well heard of it but i didn't know wth they were talking about

If you don't over feed you won't have a chemical taste. I would say the last week once you see the bracts have gotten bigger then just use plain water like the last 1-2 waterings you give it. But you don't want/need to flush any large amounts of water through it. It won't do anything to help.

If you want to do a dark period you can. I can't say I ever saw a difference but it wont hurt anything if you want to try it. If you have more then one plant I would say put one in dark and leave te other in light and see if you notice a difference.

i ended up saying fuck it read an old thread on here not sure when but it must of been years ago and people said tey tried this and nothing smoke wasn't better, and plants looked the exact same. just going to harvest before sun up and keep in a dark place to dry and cure.

thanks for the help everyone still gonna check the trichomes just to fuck around with my new microscope. i seen something crawling in one of the buds dont know what it was might find that little fucker

If your a new grower ignore the trichs and learn when to harvest based on calyx and pistils (bracts).

Your gonna read many years of ideas and different ways, dismiss it all and grow like any other plant.

Flushing is not going to do much and neither is an extended dark period but they shouldnt cause much harm so some do, it was never needed orr essential.

Looking good - dont do anything to mess up now :-)

yea im trying to learn to read um but not solely rely on it. it's really confusing but i guess cause im new

Theres no confusion just you lack experience and i feel sorry for the new grower who has to negotiate so many ideas ways and what not.

Just grow it like any plant and when it looks ready it will be. Ill try post some pictures of done bud tomorrow off google if i remember - will see most calyxs swollen and most pistills receeded wispy and brown.

It really is easy but be prepared to make the odd mistake as well - you wont make the same one twice trust me.

Dont panic and ignore a lot of whats written here and elsewhere, it only serves to confuse :-)

Here you go some done bud ready to harvest - Most pistils brown receeded and wispy whilst calyxs are swollen and plump. Notice the odd white hairs but 90% is done swollen and browned.

Keep it easy dudes :-)

thanks yea i checked yesterday when i got home looks like some of the brown hairs receeded already over i think past 2 days? im not sure if the bracts are swollen or swelling up though to me they look swollen. still lots of white hairs though like on the biggest picture. imma check the trichomes today i got my microscope in yesterday and was messing around with it. i think they should be really close though majority of the pistils on the big plant are mainly orange already i'd guess about 50% since yesterday i half ass checked um yesterday though exhausted from work.

i think they are not ready but like really close to being ready maybe a few more days for sure. i'll try to post some pics later on still dark outside
