In yards how far away could you be from your grow site to smell your plants?
How far does the smell of marijuana travel?

it all depends on what you are planting (stain) and what you are feeding them.
Last years grow was very light smelling. I grew some bubba trainwreck orange crush blue dream. I live in a res area and legal grower and was somewhat concerned about the smell. I was either really lucky or they just did not pop out the smell other grows have had. The end result on my grow was great none the less..
I was at another grow last year and could smell the grow as soon as I opened the door of my car from about 100 feet away.
I spoke to a nighbor who knows I grow and asked them if they could smell it and they said they could only when the weather was really HOT (live in cen valley ca) so.. temps here in the summer are 100+ ) but the smell was not too much they could not really pinpoint the location they just knew someone was growing.
If you are not legal I really would not risk it. Drug sniffing dogs can smell a pot seed from about 20 feet away so one plant it gonna light up their noses like Christmas!

If I had three plants in a closet and kept the door closed as much as possible do you think anyone could smell them from outside my home?

i doubt it. i got 3 plants in a closet and at night the carbon scrubber turn off, i can smell it in the room but with the closet door closes and my bedroom door closed it cant be smelled anywhere else.

Really strain dependent. Had bubba kush and super silver haze 4 each in cellar w/o carbon filter and at times could smell it in front yard say 30yds away. Possibly further with wind gusts. This time I had sweet deep grapefruit and master kush both low odor strains and barely smell them in the backyard right on top of them

Depends on:
-What part of the flowering cycle you're in (obviously the later, the stinkier!).
-What strains (some smell more than others).
-Plant mass (more plants, more flowers = more smell).
-Presence/absence and direction of covering wind
-Presence/absence of other covering smells
-Sensitivity of the nose of the smeller,
etc.
With an indoor setup and a good odor control system, you can literally stand right next to the garden and not smell it.
On the other hand, with a big outdoor grow, you could potentially smell it from hundreds of yards away.

Probably not, but its going to depend on how big the plants in question are, and more importantly, how you are venting them.
If you're venting hot air from the closet directly outside, yeah, someone could potentially smell that, and there are other ways smell could potentially get out.
Also, smell contained just inside your home doesn't make you "safe".
Ever have guests over? How about repairpersons? Landlord? People knocking at the door?
The fact that you're even asking about this means you probably need to get some sort of odor-control system in place.

Outside you should have a Half of a mile perimeter to be safe.

you could smell my grow last year from over a block away. I had people drive by and call me worried about how much it smelled. I on the other hand couldent smell shit unless I left for a few days and came back I was so desensitized.
