how does this seedling look?

healthy? popped out 3 days ago. stem is redish/dark purple, is that bad? it's ice i got from nirvana.

i have a 26watt cfl with a 10 inch reflective dome about 7-8 inches from it. is that ok for now? the reflector really does push the light onto the seedling, will they stunt the seedling growth?

You will need more light after a week or two. CFL's rock. Don't listen to hps fans. You need to multiply the ACTUAL watts by three to SAFELY estimate the light output. You can buy a vanity set from the depot for $20.00. It will hold 4 bulbs. If you use 4 32's you'll be fine. Happy growing!

i have tons of cfls... after they get more leaves i will add more but right now i curious about the stem and optimal reflector height without stunting growth.

I MUST recommend a book I'm sure you're familiar with. Jorge Cervantes' Marijuana Horticulture: The Indoor Outdoor MEDICAL Growers Bible. You can use CFL's from seed to harvest with excellent results. Using hoods with these bulbs is un-necessary. You have to make sure you are using 250-300 ACTUAL watts per 6'x6' area. I use an 8 socket vanity setup with EXCELLENT RESULTS EVERY TIME! Brick Top is right though. If you want to use standard (I call them hoovers) bulbs a Metal Halide is a better spectrum for clones and seedlings in Veg. growth.

so what does the cotyledon curling mean?? light too close so they are moving away from it? but that can't be the case the 2 true leaves arent curling.

Keep the cfl about a foot away. Light should be 16 to 18hrs. More Nitrogen, low patassium. When the 3rd set of REAL leaves emerge, set light back to 12-14hrs. This will insure a female. (Almost every time) As long as new leaves emerge, I wouldn't worry too much. No fertilizer yet. At 30 days flush the soil with DISTILLED water to lower salts.

Holy shit dont forget to tell him after it has matured a little bit to put the lights closer to the plants if your using cfl's otherwise your going to have stretching and thats what happened to me cuz i didnt do any research on indoor growing, but i managed to bulk my babies up and now they're 3 1/2 ft. tall and the one is about 4ft. with stalky main stem, but besides that cfl's are relatively cool lights, cool as in like its a lil cool outside today, and you can have them up to 2-3 inches away from your plant WHEN THEY MATURE, i would gradually move your lights closer and closer everyday

I wouldn't change the light cycle, it's not going to do anything to encourage the plant to be female. If anything it seems like it would encourage a hermie as switching the light cycles like that is going to stress the plant. Keep it at atleast 18hrs a day when vegging. Only switch the cycle when you're ready to flower.

Also CFL's aren't strong enough to be kept a foot away. Maybe for the first week, but they should be kept within inches of the top of the plant.

Flushing might be a bad idea as well. You shouldn't be using nutes until roughly the third week anyway, so there shouldn't be much salt build-up. By flushing you're going to strip the nutes that are already in the soil. Especially when using Distilled water, as it has the unique ability to "grab" more out of the soil as it contains no dissolved solids.

can anyone please tell me why the cotyledon are curling?? is it a bad sign?

i am using ro water
water temp 65-68 / room temp 73F / humidity 50%

they curl ,then they die and drop off its normal . your seedling looks very healthy, good growing...robert

I don't think it's too much cause for concern, unless new leaves start curling as well. However they generally don't die that early on in growth; they're only 3 days old. Mine start dying around 3-4 weeks. Just because they are curling though doesn't mean they are dying, they're still green.

Could be overwatering (doesn't look like it judging by the RW Cube), possibly underwatering?. Could be pH fluctuations. Again though, don't think it's too much cause for concern, yet.

thanks.. +rep

today is the 4th day and they haven't changed much. pretty slow growth i think,. i will wait another day or two and i hope they blow up...

water ph is about 6 and seems stable (no nutes yet). using ro water.

I thought I said flush at 30 days...Also light CAN determine sex AFTER the 3rd set of TRUE leaves grow. Don't take MY word for it. GET THAT BOOK. It's in-dispensible! ALSO, keep in mind alot has to do with genetics. (I.E. STRAIN)

I suppose you can flush that early, but again I see very little to no need. At 30 days you would have been giving nutes for about a week. Salt build up shouldn't be an issue that early on and getting rid of salt build up is the whole reason for flushing. I realize it's a baby, which is why flushing ~3 weeks from now makes no sense.

It's simply a misunderstanding in the wording. Determined in this case doesn't mean it defines the sex, it means one can change the light cycle that early and the plant will show you it's sex, either pistils or ballsacks, via it's pre-flowers.

However you're probably going to want to veg the plant longer than the 1-2 weeks it takes to develop 3 nodes. Then the shock of putting the plant back into veg after you've moved it to flower or a few days to sex it IS going to shock it and growth will slow for a period of time as it reverts. This is the reason most people cut clones off their plants to sex them rather than throwing the whole plant in flower just to sex it.

People should be more in tune to THEIR plants and not some pre-determined schedule. Just because a book says to flush at 30 days doesn't mean you follow it cannonically. Learn to read your plants and when/if they need to be flushed, they'll let you know.
