Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Stainless pot
  • Stainless cover
  • Tap water
  • Glass bowl
  • Ice

Step1
1/2 fill with tap water Begin to make your own distilled water by filling a 3-5 gallon stainless steel pot half full with tap water.
Step2
Float a glass bowl Place a round, glass bowl afloat in the water in the pot. Make sure it does not touch the bottom. You don't want the water that will collect within the glass bowl to boil! (It will get hot). If there is enough water in the steel container, the bowl will simply float. (If it doesn't, place a round baking rack on the bottom of the stainless pot.)
Step3
Add ice to inverted lid Invert the lid on the container and fill it with ice. This step to make your own distilled water is precisely to form the heat/cold barrier that creates a condensation effect. (Hot steam hits cold lid - condensation.)
Step4
Turn the stove on and heat tap water to a boil. As it continues to boil, it will cause steam to rise and condense on the convex side of the pot's cover. It will then turn back to liquid and drip down into the bowl.
Step5
Remove from heat and carefully remove lid. You may need to ladle off any ice water first. Distilled water that has dripped from the pot cover will now be in the glass bowl. Use potholders or gloves to remove the bowl as it will be hot. Cool the distilled water before bottling.

Good Luck...

or just let some normal tap water sit out for at least 24 hours. works for me. after each watering I just fill the bottle back up and put it in the closet for 2 days till the next time I water. cap off of course.

The ice water stays in the lid, when the steam hits the cold bottom of the lid it condenses back into water drops and roll down the curved lid and drip into the glass bowl. Thats why he says you may have to spoon off the ice water at the top so you don't spill it when you take it off.

The ice acts as the condenser, it is not being utilized as distilled water...it is the catalyst and is sitting on the inverted lid of the pot. The water being actually distilled is in the bottom.

yes, he could buy a home distiller, but he said he was trying to save some bucks...this is the cheepest way of doing it...

Good Luck

maybe a stupid question, but can't you just boil the water? if you take undesirable water and boil it, does that not make it better?

I heard just boiling it makes it worse for growing MJ.. As it doesnt get rid of the unwanted minerals etc but more or less concentrates them? It prolly gets rid of the chlorine though? Ive heard of ppl pumping air bubbles into tap water to quickly remove just the chlorine though.

Simply put...no

If you boil water, you just end up with less water with more concentrated impurities. You need to collect the VAPOR which is being boiled off. this is what the ice on top does...it makes the vapor condense back to liquid and collect into the glass bowl inside.... get it?

Good Luck.....

Thats for all the help. I do like the RO filter idea. Where might I find one? How often does the filter have to be changed?

Heres one you could buy locally ( if u have a lowes nearby ) > http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=129808-43353-WHER25&lpage=none

not sure ive never used one.. nor have I had an extra 150.00 to spend on one.. I have to admit though if your running hydro and buying gallons and gallons of distilled water an RO filter would be a no brainer.. If I ever go hydro I will more than likely buy one.
