To All My Valued Employees,

There have been some rumblings around the office about the future of this company, and more specifically, your job. As you know, the economy has changed for the worse and presents many challenges. However, the good news is this: The economy doesn't pose a threat to your job. What does threaten your job however, is the changing political landscape in this country.

However, let me tell you some little tidbits of fact which might help you decide what is in your best interests.

First, while it is easy to spew rhetoric that casts employers against
employees, you have to understand that for every business owner there is a back story. This back story is often neglected and overshadowed by what you see and hear. Sure, you see me park my Mercedes outside. You've seen my big home at last years Christmas party. I'm sure; all these flashy icons of luxury conjure up some idealized thoughts about my life.

However, what you don't see is the back story.

I started this company 28 years ago. At that time, I lived in a 300 square foot studio apartment for 3 years. My entire living apartment was converted into an office so I could put forth 100% effort into building a company, which by the way, would eventually employ you.

My diet consisted of Ramen Pride noodles because every dollar I spent went back into this company. I drove a rusty Toyota Corolla with a defective transmission. I didn't have time to date. Often times, I stayed home on weekends, while my friends went out drinking and partying. In fact, I was married to my business - hard work, discipline, and sacrifice.

Meanwhile, my friends got jobs. They worked 40 hours a week and made a modest $50K a year and spent every dime they earned. They drove flashy cars and lived in expensive homes and wore fancy designer clothes. Instead of hitting the Nordstrom's for the latest hot fashion item, I was trolling through the discount store extracting any clothing item that didn't look like it was birthed in the 70's. My friends refinanced their mortgages and lived a life of luxury. I, however, did not. I put my time, my money, and my life into a business with a vision that eventually, some day, I, too, will be able to afford these luxuries my friends supposedly had.

So, while you physically arrive at the office at 9am, mentally check in at about noon, and then leave at 5pm, I don't. There is no "off" button for me. When you leave the office, you are done and you have a weekend all to yourself. I unfortunately do not have the freedom. I eat, and breathe this company every minute of the day. There is no rest. There is no weekend.
There is no happy hour. Every day this business is attached to my hip like a 1 year old special-needs child. You, of course, only see the fruits of that garden - the nice house, the Mercedes, the vacations ... you never realize the back story and the sacrifices I've made.

Now, the economy is falling apart and I, the guy that made all the right decisions and saved his money, have to bail-out all the people who didn't.

The people that overspent their paychecks suddenly feel entitled to the same luxuries that I earned and sacrificed a decade of my life for.

Yes, business ownership has is benefits but the price I've paid is steep and not without wounds.

Unfortunately, the cost of running this business, and employing you, is starting to eclipse the threshold of marginal benefit and let me tell you why:

I am being taxed to death and the government thinks I don't pay enough. I have state taxes. Federal taxes. Property taxes. Sales and use taxes.
Payroll taxes. Workers compensation taxes. Unemployment taxes. Taxes on taxes. I have to hire a tax man to manage all these taxes and then guess what? I have to pay taxes for employing him. Government mandates and regulations and all the accounting that goes with it, now occupy most of my time. On Oct 15th, I wrote a check to the US Treasury for $288,000 for quarterly taxes. You know what my "stimulus" check was? Zero. Nada. Zilch.

The question I have is this: Who is stimulating the economy? Me, the guy who has provided 14 people good paying jobs and serves over 2,200,000 people per year with a flourishing business? Or, the single mother sitting at home pregnant with her fourth child waiting for her next welfare check?
Obviously, government feels the latter is the economic stimulus of this country.

The fact is, if I deducted (Read: Stole) 50% of your paycheck you'd quit and you wouldn't work here. I mean, why should you? That's nuts. Who wants to get rewarded only 50% of their hard work? Well, I agree which is why your job is in jeopardy.

Here is what many of you don't understand ... to stimulate the economy you need to stimulate what runs the economy. Had suddenly government mandated to me that I didn't need to pay taxes, guess what? Instead of depositing that $288,000 into the Washington black-hole, I would have spent it, hired more employees, and generated substantial economic growth. My employees
would have enjoyed the wealth of that tax cut in the form of promotions and better salaries. But you can forget it now.

When you have a comatose man on the verge of death, you don't defibrillate and shock his thumb thinking that will bring him back to life, do you? Or, do you defibrillate his heart? Business is at the heart of America and always has been. To restart it, you must stimulate it, not kill it.
Suddenly, the power brokers in Washington believe the poor of America are the essential drivers of the American economic engine. Nothing could be further from the truth and this is the type of change you can keep.

So where am I going with all this?

It's quite simple.

If any new taxes are levied on me, or my company, my reaction will be swift and simple. I fire you. I fire your co-workers. You can then plead with the government to pay for your mortgage, your SUV, and your child's future. Frankly, it isn't my problem any more.

Then, I will close this company down, move to another country, and retire.
You see, I'm done. I'm done with a country that penalizes the productive and gives to the unproductive. My motivation to work and to provide jobs will be destroyed, and with it, will be my citizenship.

So, if you lose your job, it won't be at the hands of the economy; it will be at the hands of a political hurricane that swept through this country, steamrolled the constitution, and will have changed its landscape forever.
If that happens, you can find me sitting on a beach, retired, and with no employees to worry about ...

Signed,
Your boss

fantastic letter. Insurance, workmans comp, transportation costs..... I wonder why I do this anymore.

I often condiser if I should just refuse to participate in the economy or the political process. I am really buzzed but what I am getting at is if all us stoners refused to vote until the medical mj laws were written to protect those in need; or business ownwers like myself refuse to hire or grow my business until this stupid experiment with socialism is ended we could have political power. What if we did not want to play the Democrat/republican game. Primitive tribal alliances. If you vote for me I will give you this or that.

I better get a beer.

thats how it work's in this country.

they buy their votes with our money.

i already have it in mind to not participate in the economy other than my investments that i am taxed capital gains on.
just do not buy anything you have to pay tax's on.not hard to do..just stop purchasing anything other than the use of cash.
if anyone who has two nickles to run together does the the country will collapse their socialist schemes will drown under their own weight

I read it once and that was enough. Just because that guy was a compulsive disfunctioning asshole and locked himself in his business day and night has no bearing on my desire to be part of the human race. I say go, get the fuck out. Outside of the employment he provided, he won't be missed by a single person. he was a disfunctioning compulsive asshole. Good riddance. When Money becomes the driving force of ones life, one is ruined as a human being. Get the fuck out, adios motherfucker. I really hate to see you go Vi, Not!

So, when an employer dedicates his life to his business, puts off compulsive purchases and just works his ass off to provide a better life for himself and his employees, he's a "compulsive asshole?"

Do you realize that without these types of people, we wouldn't progress? Hell man ... you really do desire the return of the Dark Ages, don't you?

Are you really this warped, Med?

This country was built by "Compulsive ass-holes" as you say. Who worked saved and built something of value. Thus employing the rest of the human race. Why punish him with out him a mess of people will be ever more dependent on government. Instead of taking responsibility for their own futures.

Med, I agree with you about money "the love of money is the root of all evil" But the Guy who owns a computer repair shop is not your enemy the guy who owns a dry cleaner, theater or restaurant is not your enemy. If anyone is the "Enemy" it is Big banks and central banking thats where money and power lie.

I see no good coming out of hurting small business owners it hurts them but it hurts us all even more. When your computer breaks down who you gonna call the government?? Because that is essentially what you will end up with.

Nice letter, but it's not reality. It may be the reality of a very few, but not of the majority.
Oh, no, it's reality Miss.

Let me assure you that if I had spent the last 20 years of my life building a business up from the ground, and I got to the point where it was successful, and I heard about Obama. I'd probably be closing shop right now, and taking the money and running.

Running to some nice Caribbean Island Nation where the bankers don't ask questions, and where it's possible to become anonymous. Anonymous so no cock suckers from the government could try bothering me, ever again.

I don't know anyone who owns a business that drives a beat up car. They're all driving the latest model.
Miss, go back re-read it, and then read the statement that you just made.

You obviously didn't see where the writer said that he was stuck in a one bedroom apartment that he was using as an office, driving a beat up Toyota and eating Ramen.

He also mentions that now he has a Mercedes, and a nice House, after two decades of sacrifice.

What's absurd is that the government want's him to sacrifice even more. They aren't happy that he chose to work from poverty up to his current level, dedicating himself to his business to grow it. They want him to continue to sacrifice for his business, but this time the form of his sacrifice will be in more taxes.

This hardly seems rational or humane to me, but then again, I'm not a politician so what do I know?

Hey, as a former small business owner, I know first hand the perils and hardships of small business. Let me tell you a story. As a struggling franchisee in a Union 76 station, when I needed help from the corporation to keep me afloat, they tried to put me out of business. You must have some knowledge as how the company credit cards work, they are basically like cash in purchasing your next gas load, at that time, loads were running around 8,800-11,000 a load. We would use all our credit cards and then have to write a check for the balance. Now the company knew we were struggling, and as we found out later after a few managers at Union Oil were indited on fraud in doing what they did to us on others, they had a few rich Arabs wanting stations who were willing to pay bribes to get one, and if they could run us out, they could sell our station for as much as 200K. Here's what they did to us: they informed us that we could no longer include our credit cards as payment for gas loads. We would have to send the credit cards to Salt Lake to the credit card processing center, and be issued a check from them. Then we would have to take that check and go to our bank and get a cashiers check, and present that as payment for gas loads. that little inconviencienca would have put us out on the streets had we not had a person to go to and borrow enough to pay for one gas load as it took between 7-14 days for the cards to turn around, then as they saw that we were going to survive this harassment, they demanded we put another 15,000 in our security fund, again we had to borrow this from the same person. By the time we finally sold our station, (They did everything they legally could to keep us from selling) we had over 90,000 in our "security fund" and those asshole had to cut us a check. We promptly paid off all our creditors, with interest, and walked with about 20K. We talked to a couple of lawyers that told us we had a very good case but it would take years and they would need about 50K up front to take on the likes of Union Oil, with injections of cash to be likely as the case progressed. We took our 20K and moved to Vegas and never looked back. But this is just one example where the parent Company fucks over franchisees, it is pretty common, especially where the company can see a profit being made in that location, then it will do everything necessary to make it a company store. Big business, spelled, "fuckthelittleguy"!

After reading this post I am somewhat disturbed by the responses but not at all surprised by the stupidity. Being a "sucessful" business owner myself I certainly know how the writer of this letter feels. Unless you have worked your ass off, made many sacrifices, and so on, you couldn't possibly understand. Before I went on my on, I spent 28 years working in a factory. I had more hours of overtime in a years time than your average employee had in regular hours. Looking back on it, I don't understand how my company survived all that time. Most (not all) American employees don't give a rats ass about nothin' but their paycheck. They certainly don't plan on earning it, they look for ways to steal time, they look for ways to bring about law suits, they are eat up with laziness and they think the world owes them a living. It's not all the governments fault that all our big business has went to other countries. The employees of this country DID NOT CARE FOR THEIR COMPANIES. "Adios and good riddance to the small business owner"? What a stupid mother fucker that would make such an ignorant statement. But a typical statement coming from a jealous failure I guess.
