How do you grow outdoor using clones?

It is may 11th, I live in Northern Cali and I am trying to grow outdoor using clones but i do not know how to transition them to the heat and lighting of the sun outdoors. They are under a light 24/7 in the house for right now. When do you suggest i should put them into direct sunlight for the first time, for how long, and what would be a good schedule until they are able to get used to it? I was told to wait until they were a foot tall and then bring them outside for twelve hours under a shaded area and then inside under the light for twelve hours... and so on. How long do i do this, and is this even right?
