How do you get your coco grows started?

Hi there,

We've been using the Canna coco line for a while with mixed results. Sometimes when we get everything right the plants look perfectly healthy through flowering without getting yellow leaves at all. Unfortunately sometimes we don't get it right. It seems to be a problem with getting them started. In this case they have a very slow start and when they eventually start growing faster they get a bit pale. They pick up eventually but it takes 3 or 4 extra weeks.

How do you guys get seedlings or clones started in coco? Are you using jiffy bags, root riot or straight into coco? What size pots are you using and what strength nutrients? Are seedlings better off in a small pot or can you go for the big pot with the rooted seedling/clone?

Before we started using coco we used light mix for seedlings or a 50/50 mix of coco and a stronger bat shit soil which always worked perfectly (in a 4" pot or something). Could we use such a soil mix for seedlings and then re-pot them into a big pot with coco?

We are using the complete Canna line with normal, untreatet tab water. medium water quality.

Thanks for your time!

RapidRooter then into washed coco/perlite charged with 1.5ml cal mag/3ml grow per gallon ph 5.8 to 6.0 and your good. Let the roots take wk or 2 before ya put the nute solution hard though

Sounds like your having a nitrogen problem. You may need to just start off stronger with the veg nutes. And id step up the pot size personally. Cannas expensive and with a big pot you have to use lots of mix to get the runoff you need to leach the medium. Plus theres other complications im sure you can think of ;)

RapidRooter looks like RootRiot so I think I'm ok with them or just Jiffy bags. In soil there are never any problems with Jiffy bags. What kind of tab water do you have or are you using reverse osmosis? I thought with our tab water calmag is not necessary. I'll give it a go though.

Not sure if the nutes are the problem. We may have transplanted the seedlings too early so they couldn't benefit from the nutes. At what size are you re-potting the seedlings? With soil that was never an issue for us. Jiffy bag, and into the big pot as soon as the first roots came out of the bottom. Some plants don't like strong soil in the first few days so we usually mix the top center bit of the pot with some coco.
And can you explain what you mean with the runoff?

How much perlite are you guys using? 30%?

I use H2O out the tap and perlite is 30% what I use. Just depends on how much u wanna feed?

Do you mean how often or which strength? Well, one of our problems is that in the first weeks the coco doesn't want to dry out at all. Later on it's getting better and we end up watering every day or every other day, depending on the pot size. 2 gallon pots won't last 2 full days.
