Homeade ebb and flow

I am in the process of making a ebb and flow system and am a little confused on how the water drains back into the rez...I understand it goes back down the water pump tubing, and then for the remaining water you drill small holes?? Am I right? What I don't get is if your holes in the container, couldn't the water drain out as fast as it goes in? Or is that the emphasis on "small holes"? Any clarification would be great...

Oh and Im using a viaaqua 180 pump (80 GPH i think)

Most people do not do anything like drill holes for the little amount that should be left. Also make sure you have a drain line that opens at the height you want to fill your tray to.

there is no need to drill holes anywhere. You should make your system so the flood table has a slight angle sloping downwards toward the drain.
