Hate Crime laws are an attempt to punish people for their thoughts, are they not?

And as their thoughts are bigoted, is it not attempting to punish them for their bigotry?

The guy is a murderer and should be executed as all murderers, rapists and giant scale thieves/con-artists ($1,000,000+) should be. It does not matter what motivated him, as the person he shot is dead. If some one kills you, but perceives it as doing you a favor (and thus not a hate crime) would you be any less dead?

Whatever motivated him is not the issue, thoughts and words are not actions and deeds. Actions and deeds are what should be punished.
For me its not the thought.. its the decimination of said thought to others in a public forum or the acting in the extreme that needs to be punished... not the freedom to think it...
Not so much what you say, but where.. like yelling fire outside or in a theater were risk to others may come to be ........

once again asinine that is saying its more extreme to kill a black, gay, ect then to kill a white or what ever race or creed you may be. The person is just as dead reguardless. humans are tribal it is just life. it happens.

The theory behind hate crime laws is that a "hate crime" isn't just against the individual, a hate crime is targeting a whole group of people through the use of terror

HAHA that Megan Meier cyberbullying act has got to be the dumbest definition of bullying. That bill will never make it out of committee, its so broad based that if anyone were to call you a name in a forum you could conceivably get the law involved and have criminal charges brought against that person. I wonder if Linda Sanchez ever heard of the saying " Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me". The following is SARCASM!!!-------------Cyberbullies, oh my ..OH NOOOOZ ITS THAT MEAN BULLY NATRONE23, He called me stupid a couple times in a forum, now im so distraught i might go kill myself, I better let the all mighty police man handle this CRISIS!! Oh Woe is me, if i had any real intelligence I would realize I can exit this forum anytime I so choose and only come back when my sensitive ego has healed. Oh Natrone23 you are such a bully and now I am telling teacher on you, and my MOM too, you better be scared cuz they are gonna throw your ass in prison. ---------------Sarcasm off. Yeah fuck the first amendment, who needs free speech, the government always speaks for its citizens anyway, the great benevolent gubbermint, Im sure they will be able to put a stop to all name calling and "CyberBullying" that exists.

Hey, if I call myself an ass can I sue myself and have the government pay for the cost of both trying to prosecute me and defend me?

Geeze TBT, I am open for a lot of lawsuits, starting with you. I have called you a few names on this site, I believe. Let me offer my apologies while I'm feeling sane, wait, that never happens, oh well, sue me.

Why would I sue you?

Do you think your words have hurt me? How many times have I turned around and thrown insults back?

If you don't sue me, I wont sue you, deal?

The shooter was reacting to years of rhetoric fomented by the extreme left's hatred of Jews, Israel and NeoCons.

I think it's sad when people deny the holocaust, like this nut job was said to have done. The people who died during that horrible time deserve more respect than that. They were punished because of someone else's hatred and bigotry. The denial of these people is merely an attempt to nullify the significance of the holocaust as an example to us all that bigotry run rampant can destroy anyone who it is targeted at,and that we should never again wait as long as we did then to stand up and fight. And what makes me even sadder is that we knew for much longer than we pretended to...and did nothing. And we didn't even get into the war because of these atrocities, but as a response to the attacks upon us.So many people say what a noble war it was, and for some, maybe it was,but we get way too much credit for the reasons we went over there. In a way, our government back then was just as guilty as those who perpetrated these crimes...because it did nothing to help until it was forced to. I'm all for America minding its own business, but when confronted with something like that, we as humans must act.Anyway, there I go off on a rant again.;-)

you guys DO realize, america new about it, and quite some american businesses were contributing things to the germans at the time too, like ibm which was contracted to make a calculating computer to keep a count log on how many jews died.

THAT is fucked up.

what... huh?

@vi redd, and others who WANT this person to be of a political vein.

He could be either, both or neither. It really makes no difference, and would not typify either. More importantly suggesting that he committed these actions as a RESULT of one or the either suggests that he, and for that matter we, are incapable of making rational decisions because of the cursoral influence of a political party. You remove the blame from the individual and that is a critical mistake.

We do what we do because of who we are, not because of what others do.

That is important.

Dunno bout the IBM thing... the only significant thinkin machine WWII era was Enigma, but the Captn brings up a really good point I know I didn't learn in school.

The US was remarkably anti-semitic at the time. We knew what was going on and had absolutely no interest in stopping it. "If'n it weren't fer them dirty japs" we probably never would have.

Our allies were getting crushed by the Germans... and we just sorta went "jews? what jews?"

*Just went and looked up the IBM thing... wow. Had no idea. Clever bastards LEASED the punch card machines to the nazis for big money, and then became the sole provider of punch cards. Evidently after we entered the war they stopped all that, and gave command of their facilities to the US Govt, and began creating war materials... most notably the BAR and M1 Carbine.

Neeto.
