Okay. I bought a whisperline when I started because I heard it was the quietest. Well, it's not that quiet. It's reasonable, but no where near the kind of quiet I want still, so I built a muffler and managed to quiet it down decently.
However, the thing is freaking huge. I thought it seemed big when I got it... and now that I am replacing it, I see how huge it really is.
I bought a Max-Fan 6" Can Fan to replace it. The thing is like 6"x6". It's absurd how small it is compared to that fucking whisperline monster I have floating in my tent precariously. It also weighs like 1/5th.
I know this is probably really obvious to some, but this is a learning experience for me and I wanted to throw this out there as a warning to anyone considering getting a Whisperline just because they're said to be so quiet... if space is a concern for you, you might want to keep shopping. When you factor in the space needed to attach an immediately-bending duct to each end, the thing needs something like 2.5-3' just for the blower... then you've got a carbon filter? How the hell does anyone with a tent make that work? And why would anyone with a room setup bother with such a low cfm fan? heh.
Edit: That being said, I just plugged the max-fan in and I think it probably is louder... will see how it sounds with good insulated ducting, though, i HOPE it will work out to be pretty quiet when capped off... if not, I guess I know that's why the whisperline is so big.
Is there something about the cage-fan design the whisperline uses that makes it so quiet? Is it inevitable that we have to sacrifice space for a quiet fan one way or another? Because none of these things are even close to quiet by my standards, and since so many growers are stealth, I would think the same would apply to their standards.
At least this max fan I can wrap in a blanket real easily after I put the insulated ducting on...
