high pressure sodium question

i went to home depot and bought a 50w high pressure sodium lamp that fits in a medium socket, i plugged it in to 3 different sockets and it never even turned on, do i need a ballast for this too? i thought it would just run off a stardard socket? can anyone help? do i need to buy an hps kit?

well i did some reading up and it said it fit in a medium base and i figured maybe it was just an indoor or a lower rated hps lamp and didnt need an ignitor being that its only 50w. it doesnt matter now i found an ignitor and ballast for 25 dollars
