Hi!

I just signed up and wanted to make a post. I have been interested in this industry for a while, but never committed to be part of it because of the shaky legal grounds in Michigan. I have a building and found that I can have it zoned commercially for medical marijuana. Its a small town and after talking with the city it sounds like I shouldn't have a problem with city zoning, and after reviewing the state application details I don't think I will have a problem qualifying. I have about 50,000 square foot building and was looking at setting up a growing, processing, and provisional facility in part of it.

I have the money to invest in equipment, and I have been researching grow operations for a little while. I however, do not have any experience with growing, and have never actually used cannabis before.

I was wondering if anybody knows where I might be able to find individuals interested in being part of and/or running an operation like this? I am new to this scene, and was wondering if anybody might be able to help me find experienced people in the Michigan area who are looking to be part of a big operation.

I have been looking at different grow setups, and think I like the idea of using pallet racking with 2 levels of plants. I see 4x8 flood trays that fit right in the racking, and I like the idea of hydroponic to be able to fully control the variables of the grow room. I attached a picture of a setup I saw that I really liked. I like the idea of running a 8' tall pallet racking with 2 levels with almost 4' of space on each level. I also like the idea of maximizing efficiency and using the space in a way that provides the most amount of product per cubic foot.

I guess one first question I have is whether its better to design and put together a facility with more small plants, or less larger plants? I was looking at different 4x4 LED light fixtures, and not sure what is an ideal amount of plants to put under each light.

Also, from a guy who has never used cannabis before; how would I go about selecting a good variety of strains to grow? I see they have different strains rated on different sites based on popularity. Is that a good way to start?

It seems there is so much information on the internet, and in my position without any experience I'm finding it difficult to navigate through it all.

I hope to learn a lot here!

Thanks!
Matt

Well you're gonna need more than 4ft of height to grow with for a big scale thing lol I've never really seen someone grow marijuana stacked on racks. You'd want your whole 8ft for one level :bigjoint: just thought I'd point that out. I'm of no use for the rest of your post bongsmilie lol

What about something like this? I saw this on youtube looking at different grow operations. Looks really great. The video said they were doing 85grams per square foot which is 3lbs per 4x4 light fixture.

Looks like they have 8 plants under one 4x4 light fixture.

Racks would be used to maximize space in a vegetative state.this will allow for more space for flowering plants. Plants will get too tall for the racks when flowering.

If your serious DM me, been a commercial agriculture consultant for 5 years.

Very similar situation to yours a couple years ago. But I got hooked up with a couple experienced growers. I could put you in touch with a guy who has done a few large scale commercial grows. He designs them ground up.

I am in Canada, not MI.
I have loved growing various plants my whole life, if i can make a living at this heck why not give it a try! as far as i am concerned on a personal level i think the legalization in Canada is not going to be a good thing for the average joe. but heck i didn't vote for the guy who brought in the legislation

More power to you. I was in business for 25 years. But no commercial operation will consistently yield product like I need for patients and I am sad that business has taken over.

And it is affecting our home grows all over regulated states already. They will keep reducing plant counts. For every business like you're thinking of starting less patients will receive good home grown meds.

We grow without schedules or greed. Business can never compete for quality. And we have proof from Mrs. MMG's doctor that our flowers have almost eliminated her life long cysts. And accompanying illness. We don't grow the strain of the week like you have to. We are worried about diverse canabanoids. Not 30% thc to charge more money to pot heads.

Just my feelings.

I agree with most of what you are saying. Although I do believe this is going to be set up to be a cash grab for the government, they have it so over regulated it's already insane and not even legal yet. I know there is only a short list of allowable strains at this point. They (gov)are taking all the cues from canopy growth corporation and subsequently from Bedrocan. It is not going to be a miracle maker for the people who really need it. But if some Uber rich businessmen want to pay me a very very healthy salary to oversee it for a few years I would be a tool to not go for it. Could open doors to who knows what in the future

I work in a "commercial grow". There is a man backing us with $$. His only request so far is we shoot to break even eventually.
But you've delusional if you think the growers don't care about the patients or the product. I have seen an old time Michigan grower, an ex cop, and an 18 year old kid go celebrate a successful week. And the success had nothing to do with profit.

I have seen growers come in at 2:00 am because the temp was a few degrees off. I have seen them come in on days off because they wanted to see a certain strain harvested. I have seen them come in an hour early to spend time with the plants alone. I have seen them fist bumping and giving high fives because of a letter written by a patient.

So if you say a commercial grow can't help the patients like you can your either disingenuous or misinformed.

wait, what will one pound of bud earn you as a grower in Michigan?
what part of MI are you in?
At 10-17 a gram the market is still tremendously huge. The tax they are going to put on it is going ti make it even bigger!!!! Marvin Jones just caught a sexy TD. Wow!!!!

I didn't say the growers don't care. I am implying that schedules will be kept and corners cut for profit eventually.

I also don't think any cash cropper is likely to let plants go a week or two more for full development. Because time is money. Better get that harvest out.

and in general small Grow quality can be higher than large Grows. More attention paid to every step possible for every plant.

but seriously though, what will the grower earn per pound of bud produced? who cares what retail is earning except retailers, we're talking about producers here and
why da fuck would anyone consider any business venture more than a pipe dream without even knowing
their margins? meh//

I'm in Michigan too. Check with your local grow shops and dispensaries if you can find one. They should be able to answer your questions. I would suggest you start small and grow your business slowly. Another thing for you to consider is who will be your customer base? Here in Michigan a caregivers permit requires a grower to sign up customers and the grower is allowed to grow 12 plants per signee.

Good luck, BigSteve.
