Hempy watering time frame

How do you stop algae in the runoff container? ..if I had a space with no plant I would put black plastic back in my Sea of Green's, I'm guessing maybe something like that with this? And how deep do you usually keep the water in the runoff?

Sorry for so many questions but this is totally new to me and I'm very interested because it sounds a lot like passive Hydroponics which is a Great but underrated way to grow, particularly for sea of green Growers

Was looking for a link to any hempy thread with a lot of pictures, easy for me to see a picture and understand -thanks in advance if anyone knows of one?
I to use black plastic that when held up to the light you can't see any light through. My understanding that will keep the Algae from growing. I also drill my hole with the bottom of the hole about 2" above the bottom. That should keep your watering down to about every two day's with a healthy mature plant. Here is a link right here on RIU https://www.rollitup.org/t/an-idiots-guide-to-hempy.386008/ and here is another with a youtube video -
.

People use all sorts of sizes, but my understanding is that perlite only wicks as high as 8inches, so plan accordingly. I'm using a waste paper basket I got at Dollar Tree that holds about a gallon and half. Drilled the hole at 2" and filled with chunky Perlite to the top of hole. Then a 3/1 mix of rinsed regular Perlite and Vermiculite. Others use many different moisture holding media. I pour is some water to fill the reservoir, then cover top with hand and pour what in the reservoir into a measuring cup to determine how much the reservoir holds. That is your basic start point with how much to water plus at least 10% each time. If you see runoff early then you know that you can extend your watering schedule longer. Here's a picture of my current buckets. These are clones that I veg'd in the small Solo size cups and flipped early to determine sex of donor plant. Decided to grow on through harvest instead of through away and see just what type of yield they would give. Only mistake I made with the little blue hempy cups is the hole is too low and must be watered with 75 ml each day.

Shit YouTube I didn't even think of it thanks again for the link I appreciate it..! YouTube, I should have known, but I get so many little tips here that save so much down the road if you know what I mean

I want to look into this I like this I want to go away more this summer up the lakes and watering is always a big issue particularly in the heat so going to stay around and probably ask more questions -thanks again:leaf:

I have a rack which my buckets sit upon. Below the rack is a tray used to catch the runoff. I generally shoot for 10% runoff, but any is good IME. I stick a probe into the res hole in the bucket to determine if they need water or not. Unless it is at least 50% empty I don't bother. This puts me at about everyday to every other day in veg. In flower that's out the window. They drink.... alot.
I mix up their juice 10gal at a time in a trashcan with airstones in it. Keep a ph meter floating in the res to mind the ph. I visit them every morning. Give 'em a drink if they need it. Otherwise, I try and stay outta their way.
Do you mind answering a couple of Q?
What is the veg time you are using and from seed or clone? What size buckets are you using?

Its the flower time frame that concerns me. Even in soil they drink heavily.

I veg for about a month generally. I only use seeds when trying a new strain, otherwise it's all clones. My buckets are 3g.

i use 2 gallon buckets with straight perlite i water every 4 to 5 days in veg and every 2 to 3 in flower you want the hempy to be pretty dry before watering again just watch the plants when the leaves start to droop alittle then water again .
