Help with my dwc.

OK have a few questions. First is I got a 5 gal dwc and it came with a dual outlet pump 2 lines and 2 stones. Only 1 hole in the bucket. I'm guessing just make a second hole as 2 stones will be best. Next I am starting my seed straight in the dwc in a rock wool cube. I filled the water just below the air line and can see water just under my first layer of hudrotone. Is that what I need to soak my cube and put the seed right into? No notes till 1 real set of leaves? Thanks and I did try to research as much as I could before the post. Just unsure about starting.

I would germ it in the rw cube under a humidity dome. Failing that cut a 2ltr bottle in half - poke a few holes in it and use that. Mist every day. Wait about 2 weeks for roots to show - then transplant into your bucket.

Ok. But no need for a light until seed sprouts? And when its got its real set of leaves go to bucket?

Hang a fluorescent bulb to prevent any stretch. Just a single 24w cfl. Go easy watering that stuff. RW holds a lot of moisture even when damp. I like to squeeze them out until they stop dripping before I use them. When you need to water, just dip one corner of the cube. About 2 weeks in, or when you start seeing roots form under the cube, transplant. Then start feeding.

Put your light on a timer before it sprouts, this removes possible issues. While it is easier to germinate in the rockwool in a propagator etc, you should continue running the DEC bucket and air stones. Because you need to know your needed water level. Once you put those germinated seedling baring rockwool cubes into the dwc tote, then unless you already know what water level you need, then your plant could rapidly drown or dry up. You need to insert a pot with hydrotin and rockwool, and then over a couple of days, monitor how wet it is. You don't want it dripping, nor too dry, you want to be able to squeeze two opposing corners and see a drops slowly being released. Not a cascade of water. You'll get he hang over time. Definitely worth it to find some bagseed to experiment (I found it significantly easier to grow clones in dwc than Seeds), back to the point, because you're not top feeding, if the rockwool is too wet, then you need to lower the water level a bit (mark it somehow for future reference) and if its not wet enough, then raise the water level a touch. It is the splashing of the bubbles that will be keeping those plants alive.

Sorry for the long interrupted paragraph, disjointed as well! I'm a bit stoned a drunk and don't give a shit, for tonight I am stoned and drunk, and I'm not stuck in front of an oven :-)

you can use jiffy pops in a dwc bucket too if you feel uncomfortable with RW... Also you can set a small 90+ gph submersible pump ($10 on amazon) with a feed line to the top/middle of the net pot. set that up on a timer, on for 15 minutes once a day to start then increase as needed depending on light, air flow, heat, plant needs....

if you squeeze rockwool it ruins it's water draining properties. you could hold it in your hand and sling out the excess water.
