help with keeping a mother plant?

i have two plants that are about 8 weeks old and through topping and tying i have them set up to hopefully become long term bonsai mothers. what i can't find on my own is a description of how to choose what to cut, and antisipate how the plant will grow next. i tried a soingle clone with no luck, in fact i seem to have bad luck with all cloning, i have only gotten one plant to root, and that one sat in a beaker of water for 2 weks.

i'm using organic soil, aurora indica fom nirvana, cfls for vegging hps for flowering, intake and outputfans around 80cfm for a rather small box.

i need to know how to choose a clone, is there any problem where the pllant should be a certain age?
wheni cut that clone is the branch gone or will it grow back itself?
i hear different things about choosing branchs from the top or bottom of the plant, any opinions?
i've read the faqs and i dont need to be told about what to do with the clone.

i have a plant, it grows, i top it, i get four tops, i tie them to the outside of the pot, they grow, i top again. i took on of the original four tops to clone and it seems to have failed. anyways
i have these three tops which have been topped and each has 4 major branches coming off, so 12. from here if i wanted to make clones could i make 12? if i make 6 what exactly will happen to the mother plant? will it grow from new sites?

i hope i'm being clear here, thank you for reading my needlessly wordy banter, any help appreciated.

i have better luck with clones taken them from the lower branches, but the upper branches will work also.

as long as you have a set of leaves underneath where you cut, then you will get 2 more branches from where you cut. if you cut the branch right at the main stalk, then the branch is gone.

i take my cuttings so they are about 3-4" long and put into a cup of water. then i bring them to the cloneing station and cut the stem again and put it right into rooting gel. cut the ends off on the leaves, put them into peat pellets, cover with a humidity dome and keep the temp. up warm enough for them to root. put a couple of cfl's near by on 18/6. i open the dome a couple of times a day and mist as needed.
