I think as long as I do not have moisture/airflow problems underneath I'll maintain what I can.Just consider that each of those leaves will feed a new branch, with a sticky bud on it. You'll find that some foliage has to stay under the screen, and will soon be shaded out. But you want to fill the screen, and then it's what is above the screen that counts.
