Help with automatic watering systems

Speaking of complexity would a capillary set up be suitable for a soil application?
we literally just been discussing that in the SIP thread. I've been bottom watering my solo cups and it works great. I'm about to buy one of these and try it out

I love it. Tried to et mine into drones and autonomous movement. More coding and 3D texturing to his liking. But push it.
The great thing about these kits, is that they start you off with basic electronics, and explain resistors, capacitors, circuit boards and such, before they ever get into any programming at all, so there is a complete skillset of knowledge gained, with the light at the end of the tunnel of building your own robot. So few kids bet basic electronics in high school anymore, but it's just as relevant today (if not more) than it was 30 years ago when I was in high school.

Thanks for all the input! Believe me I have everything I need to keep things simple, and I will at least at first. Understand this though, I'm getting up in age and spend more time on the couch than on the streets. My health says stay home more than go out. Seem like I'm always in pain. If I'm gonna spend more time at home I want something to do rather than stare at a TV or cell phone. So what can I do? set up a tent and self medicate = boring. Set up a mancave and fill it with crazy stuff sounds better. Yes I can use a wick set up, no problem just use the same one I use for my house plants. Buy a ready made set up, well that's a thought but...Make something, aggravate the hell out of myself figuring out, well that's an interesting challenge. Cost of entry isn't really an issue I just know to stay within reason and buy something I can add to as time goes on. Really I'm just trying to keep myself interested and busy. I checked out the Raspberry PI but I'm more comfortable with the programing interface on the Arduino though the PI looks pretty cool. To me this is like a car, you don't hop it up because you need to but because you want to. So all that said I will still look at some of the stuff that was recommended and again thanks whether your with me or without me.

Honest advice from an old timer. Do pots and manual on off. Avoid the tech. These arrogant computer gurus don't get plants. Have proof living here now. Go soil and adjust timed pump to needs. I built heavy lift ardrino octo drones for crying out loud. The next gen is no smarter. Only more capitalized.

I've used one of those very one's with coco and 3" pots I've never tried soil but I can't see any reason why it shouldn't work though my knowledge on soil is zero.

I got a plastic sheet to put over it and cut out the pot sites, it stops it wicking moisture into the air which also affects the ec in nutrients.

Fwiw I use a length of capillary mat to filter crap from run off, it's about a metre square but rolled up and it can deliver about 5ltrs in 20min so it's not by any means limited by volume.
Edit... Come to think of it I also use capillary to collect run off out my trays into jugs ready for me to empty :-)

I gave wet ses up for the constant attention. But if you food your roots about every 4 hours they never dry. Yet it varies by conditions. Find the time to dry and set timers to a half hour before. Minor delay in growth. Bonus in end.

And your hydro benefits your environment how? Petroleum is detrimental to all most all life. Get a clue. You are paying for your hydro veggies in trips to the doctor.

best wishes here.
Some day I will go full soil organic indoor, but to do it right it's a lot of work. I have always had my best quality cannabis with hyrdo (coco dtw), basic salts plus some organics added. Outdoor is a different story.

The initial sourcing and the first mix. Get better every top dress on successive crops. And way cheaper. LOL.

Honestly, even when I've grown in soil my best quality crops have always been a mix of salts and organic matter. The salts I use are cheap. I pay more for the kelp I add than the base salts.

Check my journal. Old but you salvation if willing to follow. Water and watch. LOL.

For anyone doing sip/capillary a aqua/smart valve is a worthwhile addition if time is precious, the tray size doesn't matter it can be 1x1mtr or that small one in the link.
If you put a valve in your tray then your only limited by your reservoir size, you can go away for week's at time knowing they're getting looked after.
The valve is basically a stop cock that sit in the tray and delivers a pre set amount of water/nutrients approx 1" through a 5mm tube, it's a plug and play item and only cost around 20 bucks.
