help with a cloner.

I have a small bubble cloner. I was wanting to know when I start a few clones. Does the fresh cut stem need to be in the water of the bubbler or just above the water? I have cloned in root riot cubes before but never in a cloner.

The stems don't need to be near the water at all, as long as the misters spray evenly toward the bottom of the tray.

This is how I've cloned for a very long time. One sec... I have to pot clones tonight, so I'll take a quick pic here of how my roots look, with the stems at least 5" from the water...

its just a bubble cloner. There is no mist, just bubbles. So should the stems still be above the water?

you want the tips in the water

It`s some what like rooting a cutting in a vase of water but you know better lol

you can still root them in a cube then transfer them to your cloner if you want but a good hydro or aero cloner should root faster then a root cube

Do you use a dome or just a spray bottle?

I don't mist, spray, dome or anything. I have a home-made cloner tent I put under my breakfast bar that is essentially a little tent with two 23w CFLs in it, with just my cloner. It experiences significant heat/cooling changes (as it is in direct contact with cold air when I open my door here in Calgary and go for a smoke on my balcony).

There's no magic... I just put my clippings in, ensure there's always enough water in it, and watch the clones root.

I sometimes have clones that have dried/dead leaves, but after they are planted, they are irrelevant. Oftentimes I just bury the dead leaves into the soil. Other times, my clones are so short I can't do that, so I just let the new growth take over.

Rite on. I ask because my cloner is in my veg room and if I don't mist they tend to dry out until roots form.

What's your relative humidity (RH) in your veg room? In my area, my RH in the ambient area is less than 20%. In my cloner tent, it's about 50% (because the cloner is the only thing in there).

Misting may be necessary for you then, but ensure you're only doing it a few times per day. Don't drown the leaves. Chopping the ends off of the leaves as you clip the clones might help too.

However, in the summer, my clones in the cloner do just fine with 90+ degree temps and less than 15% humidity.

Rh usually sits around 40. Only spray once or twice a day. Clipped leaves. Its always worked out was just curious about your setup Cuz the roots looked so nice. Is it a bubble cloner or aero? If aero how long do you run the pump? I have both but prefer the bubbles over the sprayers. Pump heats IP the water too much.

Sorry, I've got an aerocloner. My bad; I thought they were the same thing! Here's to learning :)

In my cloner, I run the pump constantly. I bought two real on/off pump timers a year ago getting ready for a first real hydro grow when I moved, but I haven't moved yet.

I apologized if I mislead you due to my misunderstanding/inexperience.

With that said, I've got 20 plants on my floor with a full cloner and I'm making a mess everywhere. Five inches of snow outside and -30, and here I am gardening.

With all what I said, here's me, with one of my clones ready to go into a pot. How's this for day 19 roots?

Very nice. And your post wasn't misleading. Both cloners are essentially the same except mine has an air stone and a higher water level. Mine is just a 5 gallon bucket with 15 2inch holes in the lid. Using a pump in it warms up the water too quick. I do have a 60 site that I built that has the pump and sprayers but I haven't used it in a while since I never need anywhere near 60 clones.

I've never used a 'bubble' cloner, but it sounds like you might need the stems in the water (or at least very near it) in such a system.

My cloner is 25-site, and has a footprint of 18x18". Typically I have it 90% full, but throw away 15 out of 20 every time I plant.

I'm glad I spoke up on this thread. With all I've done, I actually learned the difference between 'bubble' and 'aero' :)

Perhaps if you're not having much luck with your bubble cloner, you build or buy a smaller aero unit, or put the stems right in the water. I'm subbed to this thread, hoping you'll keep us updated with your findings (I'm curious).

Always heard not to put the stems directly in the water. I keep em an inch away tho. Stems stay wet just seems like the leaves dry out without a dome or spraying. Maybe I'll build a small one from a coffee can and try stems in the water.
