actually thats what im confused about. i have pretty decent experience in woodworking and related things. im not expert but i've NEVER had problems with finding a stud like this...

and i wasnt using a nail to hold my hps...i used a small nail to find the stud (or to check it if the stud finder indicated there was a stud nearby).

and its quite possible that its the building and not me...the reason i say that is it was never professionally done...(and no not by me haha)...so somethings around that place are odd...like how certain things were not build level (or properly)...

well i dont wanna take chances so i think i've come up with something easy and inexpensive...

someone correct me if im wrong but if i got two buckets (or cinderblocks) and put two (either 2x4's or posts like they use in fencing) and cement them in place...then simply run a 2x4 across the top and screw it in...wouldnt that work as an inexpensive (but extremely stable) light stand?

Unless your studs are rotten or termite infested you never caught the stud. You should be able to hang 200lbs off a stud with no fear. Try measuring from the edge of the room. Studs should be spaced 16" on center, that is, a stud every 16 inches. I would build a 2x4 stand myself. That way it can be moved.

thats what im not getting. it doesnt appear to be termite infested....it could be some of wood is rotted...not that i can tell but i cant see up in the ceiling...and get this...it has NO attic...NO crawl space above...nothing...

im tellin you this was build by crackheads from what i can tell...

i've really never had a problem like this before...every...anywhere else...so im not sure what the issue is...i've found the stud edges (according to the stud finder) but when i actually put a small nail through (to check) it always comes out easily (which means it didnt hit the stud)...all i can think of is maybe the studs are higher up and the nail its reaching it but i dont intend on finding out why at this point.

im gonna head 2 the store get the cement buckets/cinderblocks and wood and go to town...i intend on doing some pull ups with it first to check stability (i weight 180lbs...if it can hold me...it can hold 10-20lbs of hps light! damnit!

ok off to the home improvement store...

thanks guys...i really dont know what the deal is...i tried everything...

will upload pics later if i get it done today (which i hope i will)

use anchor bolts, the kind that when u put them through the hole they spread out and distribute the weight over a larger piece of drywall, its not as good as finding a stud but if you not able too find a stud this should be an easier way.

It's not a stud he's looking for its a truss...ya same shit different pile...but more importantly, trusses are 20 or 24" on center...not 16. Also if you have stucco ceilings, stud finders don't work...

ok guys...i went out and bought a good top of the line stud finder...one that doesnt only find edges but it finds the actual CENTER of the stud and displays it on an screen....

used it on the walls...no issue...found the center each and every time...put it on the ceiling...first no readings...then when it would find a positive reading i'd shut it off and back on...then try over the same space again...the second time it wouldnt indicate that there were any...so i played this game of trying to find studs but when i would get a positive reading i couldnt reproduce that positive reading again...

which has been my problem all along...

so what i did was i got some supplies...cement...wood...etc...and i built a light hanger so sturdy that i did pull-ups off of it when i first put it together and had no issues...its a beast (im 180lbs btw). so i think its not going to be an issue any longer. so the good news is my hps is finally back up (had to go nearly 2 days without it)...

i used some quick drying concrete also...

it was a pain in the ass kind of (a lot of work) but in the end i felt real good about it.

i will get some pics up soon.

thanks for all the help guys...no i hope i can return that damn stud finder.... anyone know if homedepot would take back something opened?
