if you are going to use potting soil then you buy a soilless premix. most will provide all the necessary ingredients. if you are going to mix your own soilless mix you should use either sphagnum peat or peat moss for a main grow medium. good soilless mixes are (1/3 peat moss/sphagnum peat, 1/3 dolomite lime/course sand, 1/3 perlite). (1/3 peat moss/sphagnum peat, 1/3 dolomite lime/course sand, 1/3 vermiculite). (1/3 peat moss/sphagnum peat, 1/3 worm castings, 1/3 perlite/vermiculite). (1/3 peat moss/sphagnum peat, 1/12 blood meal, 1/12 bone meal, 1/6 dolomite lime/course sand, 1/3 perlite/vermiculite)i wouldn't recamend using topsoil.

I use different ingredients, but my soil mix is 6 parts Sunshine Mix #1, 2 parts perlite, 2 parts EWC (worm castings), and 2 Tablespoons of powdered dolomite lime for each gallon of soiless mix. That's my basic soil mix used for seeds / seedlings and early veg.

For my nutes, I use dry ferts - 1 tablespoon of Blood Meal, 2 tablespoons of Bone Meal, 1 tablespoon of Kelp Meal, and 1 tablespoon of Jersey Greensand per gallon of soiless mix. I wet the mix using 1 tablespoon of Liquid Karma per gallon of water and let it sit for about 3 weeks mixing it up a few times a day. Don't let it dry out and don't overwater. I have it where I can squeeze the mix and it stays together until I touch it, then it breaks apart pretty easily - you don't want any more than a drop or two of water to come out when you squeeze it.

I water with either an EWC tea or molasses (blackstrap unsulphured) water. Pics below are 35 days and one transplant from seed (Afghan Haze, PPP, and Kali Dream).
