Help me choose lighting for Veg (seedlings/clones)

I am using an old wardrobe cabinet for my veg chamber. It is @ 32x26x65".

Inside it I have a 30x24" NSF wire shelf rack with 2 shelves. I currently have the plants sitting on the bottom shelf and the 2nd shelf is at 48". I have an HLG65 currently doing the job, but am about to swap that with 2 HLG 288 v1 boards running @ 40W each on a 80W driver.

My intention is to drop the top shelf down to @ 40" so that my 'main' veg area has @ 38" of height once I mount the boards onto their heatsink (was going to do aluminum sheets but my vendor isnt much more expensive and gives me flexibility to run them at full watts later on).

That will give me @ 25" to use for the top shelf. Originally I was going to try to put another pair of v1 boards up here, but considering it will just be for my clone dome, early first week transplants, and seedlings in solo cups, I feel like it would be overkill.

So my question is, what should I use for lighting for that top shelf? I would still like to get something with an even spread that I can get super close to the top of closet, but figure I probably don't need more than 40W for the whole shelf. Was debating maybe throw a couple strips up there with a low wattage driver? Then I had an idea maybe to just get one of those 6ft strings of leds 'rope' lights? I searched for someone else using those but all I found was some spacebucket grows.

Thanks

I am asking for what I should use for the top shelf that is 25" tall and will only be used for clones/seedlings. Original plan was 2 of the v1 boards @ 40W each like the bottom shelf will have but thinking there has to be a more cost effective option.

Oh so you only need like a measly 50watts up there.
Just use a handful of Gen2 EB strips and whatever driver you wanna use. Dmseveral options.

Or actually, since it's a 6' long space, just use 2 Samsung's strips, 1 4foot double row and 1 2foot double row. That's an easy setup to match a driver up to.

I think your idea for rope lights is a good one to investigate further. Looking at 25 inches headroom and clones and seedlings. Maybe go post up on the reddit spacebucket forums.

Does it have to be LED?
With restricted height and not needing much power, i think i would be looking into a cheap t5/cfl setup.

I fkn love the way my t5s veg plants. I usually keep them very close to the canopy and start training early.

With that little headroom, a 4" thick fluro fixture, compared to 0.5" strip and frame.

my t5 is only 2.25" thick but ya, every inch matters when your restricted for sure.
Ya you're right, but he's also got 6' of area to cover, SO a nice strip build using a 4' & a 2' Samsung, will give you even light spread across the ENTIRE SPACE.

Hell......
ditch the double rows and just use 4 SINGLE ROW, 2 of each strip, to really spread those photos out.

Sorry I just realized my measurements are confusing.

The cabinet is 32" wide x 26" deep, and overall the opening is 65" tall.

I put a wire shelf unit inside of it to seperate into an upper and lower chamber. The shelf unit has a 30" wide x 24" deep footprint. So 5sf total for each shelf.

The lower shelf will have 80w split bt 2 qb288 v1 boards for 15 sf/w for my "main" veg area.

For the top shelf, If I went with the strips, i was thinking 3 of the 1' ones would work at 15w each on a 50W driver? Again I feel like that might be overkill since this is just for clones in the dome and anything say a week or two old that isnt ready for intense light from the QBs on the lower shelf yet. I think the HLG40 would have been perfect, but those are sold out.

Thanks for everyone's input so far and sorry for confusion!

I went with a $40 light I found on amazon for my recent seedling/cloning cabinet. Supposed 4000k spectrum consuming 27w. After thinking about it though, some 560mm eb2 strips would kick ass in that space as well.

I’d go strips.

Soooooooo many low wattage meanwells drivers to choose from.
Look at these models:.
LPC,LPF,LPV, APC,APV, or even an LRS.

And also, 15w/sqft isn't overkill at all.
My HLG65 at 36" in a 2x2 is def too much light for my clones. I have been shading them to keep the intense light off of them until they are rooted and transplanted into cups for a few days. I figured half the light would be the right amount?

How about this?

3 of these:
BXEB-L0280Z-35E1000-C-A3

using this driver
LPF-40D-24

Would still cost me @ $50 though everything included... might as well just get a single v1 board and use the 54V version of that driver so I have more options later on. little less spread but more diodes...

The EB strip you linked there is a Gen1, which last I checked are more expensive than the Gen2.

Search digikey for BXEB-L0280z-35e1000-C-B3 for Gen2.
Last I looked they were under 3 bux a strip.

EDIT: I just looked, digikey only had 1 part in stock.
