Help - High Humidity, approaching 90% FIRST GROW

Hi RIU,

My seedlings are entering their third week now but I have just noticed that the humidity is too high, its running at 60-70% but when I checked min and max, they read 50 and 90% respectively.

I don't understand what is going on because I know it gets cold at night but I have my lights on at that time. They're off from 12pm till 6pm.

Is this the time my humidity rises giving me the max reading?

I am using a 125W CFL atm and in a 1.2m Sq tent. I have been in the tent at 3/4am and the readings are around 60-70%.

I haven't got space for a dehumidifier but I have ordered some little egg things that capture the moisture.

I have been reading and googling but needed to ask. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. :bigjoint:

A. Leave the tent open if you can. B. any kind of fan on the floor pointing out the door. C. move plants farther from bulb? D. test the min/max meter outside. BigSteve.

Cant leave the tent open nor can I have a fan pointing out the door. I do have a fan that clips on inside but there is nowhere to point the air out.

Move plants farther away? are you sure cos I thought the lights should be pretty close for now.

Ok I will test it outside in the bedroom. I am on the top floor.

I have just got a intake fan sorted will this lower humidity?

I am concerned about my filter, and if I have damaged it :/

I am assuming you have no ventilation system so
with that in mind I would recommend opening the door to the
grow box to let out moisture built up from watering
and keep a fan on them at all times.

There isn't any condensation on the leaves is there?
Some times moisture can build up from having
to bushy of a plant with not enough air circulation
trapping it under the leaves when its evaporated from the soil.
Hope that helps.

A de-humidifier is what you need. Your nighttime humidity(lights off) is getting too high. If you have no room where you grow, can you put one somewhere close and pipe the dry air in? Humidity isn't that critical in veg, 60-80% can be tolerated by most strains but watch out in flower, anything over 45% and your asking for trouble. Get your humidity under control now with whatever you have to do. Those eggs you speak of won't help you much and I have no clue what your height of your lamps has anything to do with anything? If your carbon filter is wet it will not filter anything, if it is dry it out and you will be fine. JAS

I do have ventilation, I have an exhaust fan 5" 250CFM or summat like that. I have that on every other hour on a low setting.
I also have a clip on fan, though this doesn't oscillate. I have it pointing away from the plants now that I have read about wind burn.
No, no condensation on the leaves.

I agree and that's what I was thinking. How would you pipe the dry air in? I have seen some online and they have vents like a radiator. I think (regarding the lights) he was saying to move them away from the plants and not directly underneath.

The carbon filter, that's the white cloth that you're talking about? Cos I can't see inside the filter.

You said your exhaust fan kicks on every other hour...does this include when your lights are off?? I noticed when my lights went out my humidity would skyrocket as well.

When my lights went out my room was never getting warm enough to activate my exhaust fan ( mines run on a thermostat). So I just got a small space heater and set up up on a timer to come on during my lights out. I also adjusted my thermometer by a few degrees and now I have no more issues. My fan come on enough times throughout lights off, that my humidity is way down and stable.

Try keeping the outlet fan on all the time to avoid the spikes in humidity. Unfortunately, you can't do much about the inlet RH without some investment.

Water/feed at the start of the light cycle to avoid too much moisture during dark period, that way the growing medium has time to dry a little.

It is pretty much ESSENTIAL to place a fan for circulation purposes in your grow area. This has many benefits, not just to avoid mould/rot.

Don't overwater/saturate your medium.

Roll on, live long :)

Run that fan much more than you are, you have to have that fan running all the time, in your case, once its off I would bet the humidity spikes. Lights off always spikes up a little more during the day for me also, i purchased this little jigamigoo and it works well:

Also depending on your grow space I hang a couple of these at times, and they also work well, maybe if you use both and run that fan much more you'll see less humidity:

Are you using a booster fan for your exhaust and filter?

No I don't think so. What is a booster fan? I have a filter -> exhaust - Ducting out window.

After reading this I have set it so that the exhaust doesn't come on with lights off. I think, sorry i'm sure that is when the temp drops cos i'm working in there at these ridiculous hours when its freezing elsewhere.

So you reckon the exhaust should still be on at lights off as long as there's like a small heater?

Also do you have that plugged into a timer? Is that safe?

I need to invest in a thermostat, did you DIY it or.... how have you got it set up?

Thanks

Thanks mate, what sort of investment?

Cheers mate will try them out, i'm on the hunt for a dehumidifier but also gonna try a heater in there, just need to find a suitable, low wattage heater.

It's a simple timer, plugs into wall, plug whatever you want to control into the timer. I'm just using it to control when my space heater turns on and off. Basically once my lights shut off, the space heaters kick on. They run all during lights off, then off again at lights on.

My electrician wired my thermostat control for my exhaust fan. But it's simple, 120v recepticle controlled by a 120v (Normally Open) thermostat. I plug both my intake and exhaust fan into the recepticle. Once the temp hits my setting, thermostat closes sending power to the recepticle. Ill take pics tomorrow.

Ok I've got a heater on the way and will do it how you have, just gotta make sure it doesn't get too hot but we'll find out.

Yes cheers pics would be good, I get the general gist of it, but wiring both the inline and the exhaust? Also where do you have the thermostat located? I've seen some where they are built into a plug but the problem is thats where the temperature sensor is as well. I'm using a grow box in a bedroom.

But if you're system is similar to a DIY project I've seen then the thermostat will be where the plants are and you could place it anywhere because of the cords.
