Hey man I'm probably the newest member of this entire website. 2 inches is way too close for a cfl to a plant. EVERYONE, and I mean EVERYONE recommends keeping cfls anywhere from 2cm to 3-4in away.I keep my cfls approx. 7-8in above the top of the plants.

your the newest member. info A. (being new does not mean lack of info), info B. everyone says 2 in. is bout best for your plant and finally info C. you keep you cfls way to far from your plant!!! obivously info A. & B. are correct, i have around 8 cfls around 2-3 inches all around my plant and my highest temp ever reached in my garden is 85, my plants love the cfls being that close! i dont know why a kno it all newb like you would tell sum1 to move a fuckin cfl bulb more then half a foot away from your plant! so much waist in light and lumen output. im sorry nooby but the info you have stated makes it look like you dont kno to much. what size cfls are you using? how big is your plant? veg? flowering?

edit: and very surprising you have all of your cfls 7-8 in. above your canopy? no lights on the side of your plant cfls need to surround your plant the just dont have the power to penetrate to the lower leaves

Hey mark first of all, Im not trying to be a know it all second of all, the way I have my set up 2" is way too close for my plants and it was too close for his as well, instead of jumping in at the end of a post why dont you take the time to read the fucking thing and look at the guys pics. Now, if you wanna help the kid out, help him out but talking shit on a computer isn't gonna get you anywhere. Stop being so angry, smoke a bowl, and relax. Life's not that serious. Not everyone on here is trying to be the Jorge Jung of 2010. Some people are just having fun. You should try it.

Say what you want if cfl's are much more then 2" away you loose more then half the possible light they put out. "low watt cfl's"

I could give a crap how someone grows. Nor did I tell the guy not to do it. I just told him that anything much over 2" is a waste. There are jerks on the site but they tend to not hang around long. As far as bashing. Tell em to f off in a nice way of corse. If you have a real problem talk to a mod.

ehh I just said screw it and found the info myself.

as previously stated...I agree completely. Its all about the right temps... which fans are the answer. My theory (from experience) is that when you drop the lights inside a tub The heat has really no way to escape except passively through the top. by blowing fans over the heat source to extract the heat. You are solving the problem and you can put your lights closer to the plants, Oh... i dont know... say around 2 inches :-D. Then you are utilizing the most lumen per watt ratio as possible for CFLs.
Peace,
Natty

OK as I am a newb and everyone is saying it, why is it my plants started burning when I had my lights that close? I mean I dont have an exhaust fan in my box, although it would be easy to put in, is that why? I did have a fan blowing right over the plants and bulbs but my plants started getting yellow, so I moved the lights up and now they look like this and they're only 3 weeks old: View attachment 951234 View attachment 951237 Could they be doing better? They're not stretched at all, in fact thay're oddly bushy. Any ideas how I could maximize my efforts?

Jared, Sorry to move in on your post man, I just felt the only way I'd get answers to my questions were if I put them directly here. No disrespect brother. By the way, We all wanna know how those little guys are doing now??

i have lots of fun actuly just cut my girl down this mornin fuckin lookin amazin
i speak on how the cfls are efficent, ive read this thread front to back b4 you posted on it. i just dident give a fuck anough until you sayin everyones wrong when they say have the cfls within 2 inches, your ventliation isent set up well anough i actuly ran 4-5 fans keepin my girls cool, but ya i i never needed to grow inside a rubbermaid tub. so i dont kno how that goes but id recomend gettin better air circulation and get ur lights more efficently placed!

jared its great that u can build a fan from a xbox and phone charger. but really be careful. if that starts a fire and the fire company comes ur screwed. just go buy one. unless u know what ur doing then thats great.
