answer these fast.............

#1 is it humming normally? or is it making a clicking sound?
#2 does the light go orange, but not turn on? is it just dead?

I would just go get another one, that way you can eliminate that as a problem.Worst case you have a light bulb ready for down the road.....I'm totally new at this myself but just plugged mine in 2 days ago and it's working.Just make sure it's on its own breaker (15 amp) and don't run anything else of of the timer, extensions...I gave it it's own source straight up.You may already know this but just trying to help if I can.Make sure it's got it's own power and plug in another bulb is what I would say.

.....try plugging it in by itself and see if it works...it may just not fire up if there is not enough juice...don't really know.

I would purchase another bulb. Like someone said previously, it's not a bad idea to have that extra bulb. I know they are expensive, My 600 watt digilux bulbs run me around $100. By doing this you are allowing yourself to isolate the problem. It does indeed sound like there is a problem with the bulb.

then the bulb IS dead. what make? and how old is it? if its less than a year old it should fall under warranty but that depends on the make.

HID bulbs have a life of around 10,000 hours. so 2-3 years is about right.

normal house breakers are only meant to carry 15 amps. a 1000w light on a 120v circuit draws 9 starting amps, and 7 running amps. add exaust fans (.5 A) osculating fans (.3A each) and everything else a grow needs and you have 10~ amps drawn from that circuit. a 42" LCD or 27" tube TV draws 750w~ which is around 4 amps, + everything else for the TV and you go over 15 amps.
put your grow system on its own circuit, this will avoid possible electrical faulting and fires.
