Heatsink alternatives

The vinyl Fence post is not a heatsink, it's being used as a case. Those designs are still using a metal heatsink inside the fencepost.

The most budget friendly option for a heatsink is digging through scrap piles or spending a lot of time sifting through ebay and craigslist. The problem with both of these methods is that without being relatively familiar with the size/shape, it's hard to know how many watts they can handle. Sometimes if you're lucky an eBay auction will contain a spec sheet.

I believe @Fastslappy and a few others have dug heatsinks out of vintage electronics (receivers, pre-amps, etc) but unless you're getting those for free or very cheap I dont think you're going to see a lot of savings vs. time spent.

Bon chance!

Besides vinyl fence posts :p is there any other more budget friendly options for heatsinks?

Afaik the only alternative is cheap CPU coolers like ARCTIC Alpine 64 PLUS, it's about 10$/pc and according to the internet reports, it does the job well.

Ya, I don't wanna build a big rail system to mount those on. I'd rather have a flat surface and something that looks like a light. I'll use 5.886" @36" x 3. 1 with 3000k, one with 3500k and the last 5000k. 4 3590s ec under 100mm lens with chip lok ideals. I will build a 36 x36 square out of L aluminum 1"x1" so I can set each one in when I switch to flower. Rather than just the 5000k. Once I make em, I'll probably sell my go green on ebay.

Just damn $180 for 3 6"x3ft slabs of finned aluminum seems very expensive. But it's the only place I can find em

as for the why of salvage ^ ^ the post above
after you've looked at sinks awhile you get a feel for what might a good fit
right now I'm getting 12" wide sinks outta receivers those were free & if you are fleabayer
lots o options but be careful & ask questions of the sellers
Fleabay was a good 4 me thing just days ago , I found a doz of cpu coolers outta servers that were $3xx each as I was just pulling the trigger on those Artic 64's a doz , you do the math , @ 3bucks I give these a run
as for CPU coolers they are Flexable you can tighten the array very simply
where on a bar they are there (cobs)
We are talking active cooling so passive this doesn't apply at all imo
I always try to check ebay on prices anyway as most do
take a few looks at salvage but if your in a place that shipping is a issue
hit the recycle days where ppl turn in electronics , cherry pick amps AVR's ect
