I am all for all technologies and approaches and just flat out love growing plants in general.
It is interesting though that the bigger growers with lots of lights and BIG yields do not seem to be making the jump into led's in the numbers we would expect to see if true "hps replacements" are really on the market

I think because many guys are just stuck in their ways (hint hint)

Look at guys like @sixstring2112 and you get all the feedback you need.

But also if I was starting a new grow on a large enough scale HID might still make sense for upfront cost until we would sell a crop or two and then upgraded. A lot of people doing this also already have HID lighting that's personal use stuff that they can use. You get three to four growers together starting a biz and they will damn sure throw in their own genetics and lights too right. How much cost does it shave off if you don't need to outfit the large grow with lights and genetics........

I love building shit and the DIY but not everyone is like that. I do not feel LED is the final answer right now and that the technology still has room to grow and things to teach us like the new QB's and the Autocob's I am testing.

I'm a hard core HID guy at heart but I'm also a computer techie guy so new tech always gets my blood boiling and so does testing it first hand to get my own answers. A lot of the theory of lighting and growing does not always translate to real growing. I can tell you that unless my current photo period grow is a complete bomb I cannot see starting up my Blue MH or HPS again based on what I have already seen with my autos and the veg closet. Temps are easier to manage, plants are happy and feeding just as much if not more, trich production is on another level, and both lights have surprised me in ways I would not have thought. The QB @ 3000K has not at all given the stretch that I expected, and the single engine COB's and the ability to adjust them individually and take out/add a light when needed is god send when you grow different strains all the time. Either way I have not missed my HID's at all and I think those who know me well like you can say the current crop of plants I have going are my best yet and I have been all LED at the new place except for a week or two with the Blue MH up............

I think a lot of people who argue about the different lighting also forget, when you talk green houses lighting they buy regardless of tech is "supplemental" because they use the big HID in the sky still for the bulk of their lighting.......

Just my $0.02

Genetics are the most important part about growing , not the light, that's just a small part that really controls yield mostly and somewhat quality, but you can only grow the genetics you got, and good genetics aren't given out for free, and are very sought after unless you plan to start a bunch of generic strains like GG4 , sour d and blue dream.

Replacing lights are expensive.
Especially if you're operating on small profit margins.

And people who just have a conservative mindset and don't like change.

Then there are the idiots, people who think CFL is more efficient than HPS for example.

For all of those with an Advertiser Badge, "Grand Master Level" threw out the offer the other night - step up and offer up a fixture of what you consider a replacement for a 1000w hps and he will do a well documented and accurate side by side. Then buy enough of the fixtures to replace all of his rooms if they deliver.
Sounds like a pretty legit offer and good publicity to me?

Who is this? We are willing.

At this point in time the high upfront cost of outfitting an op with premade fixtures doesnt make sense unless youre factoring in extraordinarily high utility costs.

Then again it seems a bit silly asking a bunch of DiY nerds in a DiY thread about the motivation of commercial growers who have absolutely nothing to do with DiY lights.

Actually we can beat HID installation cost when you factor in Utility rebates and Lower HVAC install cost in new facilities.
