Oh, it has changed me. It has made me aware that for the most part I live among idiots. Not referring specifically to RIU but there certainly are plenty here. Cynical, yes, in many ways. But then you meet some good people.
The Internet is fundamentally changing human interaction, obviously. The end of the nation-state. That's my opinion.
One more thing. In terms of the mentally ill.... Society's tendency has been to keep these people a bit walled off, usually in basements, institutions, etc. But now days these folks sit online and interact with each other. They reinforce one another's completely whacked out worldviews and publish seemingly reputable looking websites. Weak minded non-mentally ill accept these as news sources. The illness spreads....

My first foray into Youtube was a bit of a shock. Prior to RIU and Youtube my Net experience was limited to a forum that, in retrospect, didn't prepare me for this brave new world.

i use google and youtube if i ever have a car problem.. thats about the best thing i use the internet for. if you got tools and can follow directions.. with google youll never need a mechanic
also with this hobby i only got a couple good friends.. so sites like this are good for the grower because we got some like minded stoner friends to share our accomplishments and ask for knowledge.

Reminds me of Nickelback in a way. There are things and ideas that I am aware are popular, but I never really encounter them. But on the web, no matter what you do (even product reviews) you get exposed to them. Like somebody keeps playing Nickelback. Over and over. For me, the TeaParty is my personal Nickelback.
I started the "chat thing" back in the 90's (we had Free Prodigy accounts) dial up 14.4 Baud baby! only got about 6.5 tho.. but chat worked pretty fast unless the inlaws called..
I think we all are a bit goofier here then IRL I moved onto a forums for a private server forum as an admin/mod around 93ish.. spoke to some folks (it was a pc forum/software) for many years after I moved on from that forum..
One guy was my Photography mentor when I began my Photography business.. he helped me with gear/shots etc.. all over the phone.. and emails.. we would speak about every month or so give updates..
I helped a few guys from the forums out financially.... spoke over the phone to many of them.. and met 1-2
moved on there to a money saving forum (still log in.. but dont post much anymore) and that had a random jib jab like thread area too.. it kinda got more of a younger crowd and I moved on from there... to here..
have not met anyone.. but I am pretty much the same.. perhaps uglier then what's been posted in the past..

My interests are varied and the net has allowed me access to some information that would have been out of reach before, I choose my words more carefully when communicating online only due to lack of the usual cues one uses to express an idea properly.
I try not to be different from RL, I know there is a slight difference but the mask I wear here is a real as any.

fb is a good way to keep in touch with family. many of mine are on it all friggin day. aside from that i just like to use the internet to do research. the foodnetwork is my favorite website. riu is my second fav.

Yes in every way imaginable. It gave me a life when I could not speak. I can now, thank you 'net. I began working for a large internet company in the early '90s and started on community software then. I started at 100,000 and left when we reached 26 million to build another. I actually now specialize in network middle tier and large bandwidth management. LOL
..... too funny, yes I'm still the fast transition specialist I began as..... but I am so very different. It seems as much as we change we get to be more the same.
