You can water with 7.0 Ph and test the run off....or buy a probe (not too expensive)...

(Edit....Though , like Unclebuck, I've never bothered....it's all done in my soil mix ;))

most check runoff ...for an indication...personally IMO no need to in soil/soiless when properly amended with dolomite or some other cal rich source...I haven't used my pen for plants in years...it is relegated to hot tub use

Not sure where I read it but it was called a 2-1 soil ph test and works like this.
I use distilled water that reads 5.5 on my cheap ph pen.
Take a container (in my case a shot glass) of soil.
Take 2 containers of distilled water and mix it with the soil.
Let it sit a half hour or so and strain it through a coffee filter.
Take your ph tester and read the filtered water.
With 5.5 being my starting point I look if it's higher or lower then 5.5 and adjust the soil or water to correct the problem if any.

Most times it comes up in the high-mid 7's range and I usually adjust my water to 7.4.
I use hempy buckets or say bottom feed-water so I can't measure the run off.
Just a cheap soil outta the bag sorta test.

So you are assuming your pH pen is reading 5.5 while the actual pH is 7? Then you go on to trust the other readings as you adjust? Just trying to make sense of this...

if i ever do upgrade to hydro which would be nice, unless my plants show any bad effects, i would stick to using the only leave the tub of water untouched over night. as thats never failed with my old an current grow.

I even forgot to disstill my water the last few feeds due to busy offline life. But my BM seems to have accepted an not been badly effected by it. but overal. its your grow an your decision on what oute to take.
