Sorry but that is the biggest load of rubbish I've ever heard water crystals a gimmick? Go buy some, wet them watch them absorb water and become 10x there original size and turn into a wet gel, put them in your garden cover them up and check on them 6 months later, They are still soaking wet full of water... Where did you hear they are a gimmick they are used in commercial agriculture in dry areas?? That means they have been studied by real scientists and used by real farmers??
I bought a jar of those crystals 30 years ago. I put them to the test in pots and in sections of my garden. They made no difference. I still have a little in the original jar, someplace. They dry out along with the surrounding ground, believe it or not. The ONLY conditions where they might help retain water is in VERY sandy conditions where water passes through the soil very quickly. You just learned something, believe it or not.

Also how does having organics change the moisture retention? Sure some mediums like coco coir hold moisture better than others but not sure how this has anything to do with organics? Organic material is used as a food source for plant as it breaks down not really anything to do with water retention... This has more to do with bulk mediums hence water crystals...
You really have no idea what you are talking about. Sorry.

Some advice even though you've heard it all before and know it all... The minute your roots touch the outside of that pot your roots growth rate slows down by a lot... Roots slow down plant slows down yield is reduced dramatically by increasing pot size or planting in large holes and not reducing growth rate in roots you would see a much, much better yield just with this simple step...
I know you didn't take the time to read my thread, but those are bottomless pots on top of holes with good organic soil. The pots act as raised beds and makes sure when I feed the nutes go right through the root system. I know im not putting out pounds but I think I got a decent thing for maybe 4-5 visits a month. All I can say is pics or it didn't happen.

P.S its the thread title that fucked you.

water crystles do work btw, perhaps alot has changed in 30 years?
Fill me in, please? My experience tells me the benefits are iffy. How much do you use? What soil type? I've rooted clones in them. It actually works for that, but they didn't do well when transferred to soil. Too much of a change in environment, I think.

Want to hear the real trick to encourage water retention? Add 10% clay(adobe in my case) to your planting mix. It provides much more surface for the roots to absorb from, and slows drainage, allowing soluble nutes to stay in the root zone longer.

You people are funny... You chucking a handful in your garden 30 years ago is conclusive evidence something doesn't work. Even though the first hydrogels (water crystals) for agriculture didn't come on the market till the late 80's. You also realise there are 1000's of different kinds of hydrogels made from 100's of different synthetic and biodegradable materials. But your using them once 30 years ago proves they are a gimmick and don't work. The fact they use them to to help re-vegetate mine sites, quarry's ect, means nothing...

Bud nugbong: regardless of what unproven system your using, big pots or large holes filled with a good organic soil generator (soil mix with lots of organic material) will prove much, much more effective and produce a better yeild it also means you wouldn't need to feed any nutes until flower. Try it you will be surprised how much of an improvement it makes...

Doublejj: I wouldn't be thinking your the best grower to ever grace the earth, your growing 2 pounders in your back garden I assume with plenty of water available. You have the sun there are people achieving that and better in there first grows following some simple recipes...
