Growstone layer on top of soil

I want to encourage my roots and microbes to populate the top layer of the soil in the container that is normally void of most roots and microbes Will a layer of growstones on top allow this to happen? I grow in smart pots and will most likely put a fan to blow over the growstones because they hold too much water

Not sure honestly ...I've seen people do a thick layer of straw but I'm not sure if that's just to retain moisture or help out with what your wondering .......

I'm not so much concerned with the price or water retention of the product only if it will promote growth of microbes and roots near the surface water is only a concern if it will end up holding TOO much water

I'm only concerned with the thought that it could retain too much water and drown\ promote fungus of the roots or even fungus nats but I think the fan will take care of the problem?

You worry too much. I don't use mulch and always end up with thick roots on top. If you are worried about fungus gnats, use mosquito bits.
I know the roots grow near the top on their own I just know a darker wetter environment up top will promote more growth the more important part i am concerned about is the microbes the lights damage their populations so that was another thing I was questioning if it was worth
