So i gave my mate some seeds the other day and explained how to germinate them etc with towl and jar and he still got lazy and didnt do that. Just placed them straight in his soil... so his just wondering how long extra is it going to take before he sees a sprout.

if he keeps the soil moist but not saturated it "should" take the same time from the time u would have put the seeds in the towel. there is just a slight smaller chance of survival, he probably be fine but tell him how important germing is if u dont like wasting beans

germinating is just to make sure your seeds aren't duds... but if you plant them in soil, and the soil isn't a cold temp... it shouldn't be a problem...and yeah... don't soak it, spray the soil as if you had a sprout in its first week...

Planting them directly in soil is actually the best way of doing it, imo. Why handle them so many times when you don't have to ? You do more harm than good.

well here we go.. my current grow, at the begining I did an experiment on this... out of 20 seeds 10 I used a papertowel / heating pad germination method and then the other 10 seeds I placed directly in soil (small styrofoam cups with baggies overtop (acts as a humid dome) and placed them both in a dark cab... 8 of the ones in cups broke soil within 48 hours amazing :) while the ones in the paper towel displayed a taproot within 24 hours I planted them in soil after 24 hours and none of them broke soil before the others that were already in soil ... so idk..
I think what i'm going to do is just use the small styrofoam cups and place them directly in soil...

the key to germination here is , warm, moist, dark , and very humid.. think about it,
place a heater or a heating pad in a small cab then use small styrofoam cups with a good soiless medium, place your seed about a half inch down wet it good... then place a baggie over the top dont use a rubberband like alot do , then shot the cab and make it light tight.. within 48 hours they should break soil...

Well, I'm not going to get in a big argument, most people do use the paper towel method, everything has always popped out of the soil in about 3 days, how much quicker do you need ? The ones planted in soil always seemed to be stronger.

Do what works for you, because it works for me, you can still get different results. If you like the paper towel method stick to it.

natures way always works best. I just like to germ if I second guess if a seed is viable or not.

la9 is bang on the mark this is by far the best and most foolproof way to germinate seeds i do it this way and always get 100% germ rate.

It is not a matter of being lazy but instead just of germinating seeds is a different way that most people do.

I know of a very good very experienced grower who totally swears by germinating seeds in soil. He says in his experience it creates stronger more vibrant plants.

planting seeds straight into soil is by far the best/foolproof method.
it does create stronger plants with thicker stems doing it this way.

LUDACRIS.

You have always had a total 100% germ rate?

What have you only had one or two grows in your life?

I am getting near my fourth decade of doing this and I will go through periods where I will get a 100% germ rate but that is unsustainable over a long enough period of time.

Eventually someone will get a bean or two that are not viable and no method for germination will ever overcome that.

never had a seed not germ in about 60+ seeds.
3rd grow.
(i germ seeds for my friends to get them started regularly).
maybe its just luck.
i always use NIRVANA seeds only(never bagseed).
