I live in a sandy area, and all the old timers around here say that marijuana likes sandy soil, But I'm not sure about completely growing out of straight sand. I've also noticed that I put sand on top of my soil (gnats), and after a few weeks of watering, the sand is pretty compact. So i dont know if the roots would grow in the packed sand.

I bet they would. Plus, this is in the hydro section, so maybe he's considering using sand instead of, say, rockwool.
