Growing Techniques for maximum CBD(Cannabidiol) content?

Hi first post here.

A little history about me: i smoked pretty much A grade skunky sticky pot 24/7 from the ages of 17 to 23 and loved it until it "broke the camels back" and it got to the point of just looking at pot sent me into panic disorder(crazy heartbeat and stuff).

Im now 27 and haven't smoked more than 2 grams since and i think i have recovered to the point to where i can smoke every now and again. A few months ago i smoked a couple of cones of weak bush bud and it was absolutely wonderful, really high and no anxiety at all, which i think may have been high in CBD due to what ive read of land race strains being high in CBD.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now to CBD:

From the articles and videos ive seen this is the stuff in MJ that basically lets you enjoy the high without the anxiety.

Some info on it(the vid is especially interesting):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannabidiol
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2cAFRAX3Gs
http://www.counterpunch.org/gardner03132009.html

Now i plan on setting up a small personal grow in the near future so i can experiment and control exactly what strains are grown and what exactly goes into the plants so i can find a good strain and Technique for maximum CBD content.

So here are my questions:

Nutrients? organic or what if any can be used to max out CBD?

Light Factor? Can different colours of light or intensity affect CBD content?

Strains? Indica or Sativa(im leaning towards indica)? I know at the end of the day a strain can only have a certain CBD content but what can be done to max it out? Another thing suggested to me is to find a pure strain of industrial hemp seed(which is supposedly high in CBD) with little to no THC content and cross it with a half good strain for a good THC to CBD ratio and truth to that?

And harvest time? This is, from what ive read, can have the most potent effect on CBD content. Harvest buds earlier or later?

Sorry for the long post but maybe this thread can become a little info centre for people wanting higher CBD content in their pot?

Much thanks.
hey i read your problem and i think going indica is your best bet try finding a strain with a strong body high as this is the ressult of greater cbds also if you harvest just past peak potency it will increase cbds use a 30 x handheld microscope to look at the trichomes they should be degraded slightly and amber or cloudy in color thats a sure sign of a smoke with higher cbd to thc ratio hope i could help

The idea that modern strains of cannabis contain little to no cannabidiol doesn't seem to be correct. At least according to recent human study looked at the THC and cannabidiol (CBD) content of marijunana and their relationship to memory impairment in humans.

Rather than providing the marijuana and controlling the concentration of THC and CBD, they let the 134 subjects smoke their own stuff. Then they tested samples of this "street weed" from each subject and compared those smoking weed with the highest CBD to those smoking the lowest CBD content weed.

They found that while the CBD content of the different smoke varied greatly, the THC content was statistically similar among all the subjects. Further, that those who smoke low CBD cannabis had marked memory impairment, while the high CBD pot smokers had no such impairment. Lastly, the CBD content of the cannabis had no effect on the degree of intoxication the smokers felt.

I'm not sure of the evidence for the claims made in this thread to the contrary, but this study shows they are completely mistaken. The study seems well done and I can't imagine a motivation for falsifying the results. As far as this objective evidence goes: 1. Modern cannabis strains which are high in THC concentration, also contain varying amounts of CBD 2. That the concentrations of CBD which can be found in modern "street weed" are medical potent enough to completely prevent the substantial memory impairment of THC 3. You can still get completely wasted with high modern high THC strains and preserve your brain cells at the same time by making sure you smoke high CBD strains. Hey and maybe even prevent the anxiety and paranoia at the same time.

Br J Psychiatry. 2010 Oct;197(4):285-90. Impact of cannabidiol on the acute memory and psychotomimetic effects of smoked cannabis: naturalistic study. Morgan CJ, Schafer G, Freeman TP, Curran HV. Clinical Psychopharmacology Unit, University College London, Gower St, London WC1E 6BT, UK.

BACKGROUND: The two main constituents of cannabis, cannabidiol and ?(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), have opposing effects both pharmacologically and behaviourally when administered in the laboratory. Street cannabis is known to contain varying levels of each cannabinoid.

AIMS: To study how the varying levels of cannabidiol and THC have an impact on the acute effects of the drug in naturalistic settings.

METHOD: Cannabis users (n = 134) were tested 7 days apart on measures of memory and psychotomimetic symptoms, once while they were drug free and once while acutely intoxicated by their own chosen smoked cannabis. Using an unprecedented methodology, a sample of cannabis (as well as saliva) was collected from each user and analysed for levels of cannabinoids. On the basis of highest and lowest cannabidiol content of cannabis, two groups of individuals were directly compared.

RESULTS: Groups did not differ in the THC content of the cannabis they smoked. Unlike the marked impairment in prose recall of individuals who smoked cannabis low in cannabidiol, participants smoking cannabis high in cannabidiol showed no memory impairment. Cannabidiol content did not affect psychotomimetic symptoms, which were elevated in both groups when intoxicated.

CONCLUSIONS: The antagonistic effects of cannabidiol at the CB(1) receptor are probably responsible for its profile in smoked cannabis, attenuating the memory-impairing effects of THC. In terms of harm reduction, users should be made aware of the higher risk of memory impairment associated with smoking low-cannabidiol strains of cannabis like 'skunk' and encouraged to use strains containing higher levels of cannabidiol.

Hello,

please read this http://projectcbd.org/CBDiary.html#Mar01.11

You're gonna want to get the Sour Tsunami strain..

I think high CBD weed is the next thing in medical marijuana..

trying to smoke leafs is not gonna help any. You need to eat it . Juice the fan leafs.
Can you give a little background on juicing fan leaves?
I have read an article or two, but totally forgot about the practice..
Are the leaves rich in CBDs?

In simplest terms, you want an Indica/Indica dominant plant, and you'll want a good amount of amber trichs at harvest. It's the real up, sativa-type buzzes that can cause that anxiety

read alasken thunderfuck has 9.23% CBD. My girlfriend gets anxiety from marijuana. The only thing that she can have is lower thc strains with high cbd or a very very late harvest Burmese kush. Testing out twilight next. Its full indica.

. . . , which i think may have been high in CBD due to what I've read of land race strains being high in CBD.

My experience is that high CBD pot does a lot to kill the high, without killing all the medical value. Given what you want you will probably do well with a mix of high THC bud and high CBD bud, if you want the effects of higher THC as well as the effects of CBD. But my experience is that a single high CBD plant is a very poor high. Good for some of us.

Nutrients? organic or what if any can be used to max out CBD?

I looked for this info and most of what I found is for budding high THC plants. Also, and I am sorry I can not find the reference for you for you to check, but I recall reading that THC production is expressed primarily in the buds. CBD was throughout the plant. It may be why people suggest using the leaf. But take that with a barrel of salt until more sources state it, IE people who do real plant research. For the record, I am not a source.

My suspicion is that a consistently high CBD producing plant's genetics are what you are looking for and not lights, nutes or other factors. Rationally considered it is the least manipulated genetics that seem to have the most CBD. Suggesting that they are adapted to normal sunlight conditions. Playing with frequencies of light may produce a maxed out CBD level in a plant, but really how much experimentation and money are you prepared to dump before you get a response you want.

But if anyone has tried UV lights and tested their high CBD pot to see if there is a change in potency over standard gown let us know. I have heard that it helps with THC production, it may with CBD.

Genetics genetics genetics. The problem with trying to engineer plants through environmental conditions may raise the CBD to the point that you get the max expression of CBD, but CBD has been largely removed out of the gene pool of commercially grown pot. No point, without the right seed you will probably not get enough CBD.

There are good high CBD plants, something that should have a higher CBD to THC ratio. Most of the tested plants in the bay area with high CBD are roughly 2:1 or higher CBD to TCH ratio.

Short answer is that you can breed plants with high CBD. But why do it when it has already been done and seeds and clones are available as something resembling standardized products. (If you live in a place where you cannot get the seeds or clones without undue legal risk, I apologize for the suggestion as potentially unusable, but it really is the simplest way to go about it.)

Also from what I understand you are trying to breed back in CBD which successive generations of breeding has taken out, by professional breeders. Skip trying to breed plants yourself and keep it simple. If it is your goal to get high and reduce unwanted symptoms, take my suggestion and grow a high CBD genetic stain and a high THC strain. Mix them as you want.

I am starting a high CBD grow soon. I can get Harlequin clones, and am looking for the high CBD Cationic clone, but they have not penetrated in the market in the bay area yet. It will be months from now, but I’ll let you know how it goes.

The thing to remember is that a lot of drugs have a failure point from regular use, over use, even minimal use or just poor luck for individual’s ability to tolerate a drug. Three or four years of prescribed narcotic usage and now I can’t take them. Even when pain was 7 out of 10 they were worse then the disease. Not to jinx you, but it may have happened to you.
Hope not and good luck,
gabrial.

Synergy Wellness growers collective is dedicated to CBD Rich products. For the last 2 years, we have become CBD specialists. 90% of what we grow is CBD rich. The term CBD Rich means that there is a minimum of 4% CBD content. Some people that say if you want CBD, "get a good indica". They do not know what CBD rich means. While it is true that an indica is higher in CBD than Sativa, typically an indica will have .5-.8% cbd vs sativa at .2-.4% CBD. Still, almost all "recreational" strains are less than 1% CBD.

We have been propagating and growing CBD rich plants, looking for the best strains. We do not breed them, just try to find the best strains we can. We have lab test run on our products. However, since it is expensive to run these tests, we are judicial in paying for them. Only a gas chromatography test is accurate.

My experience is that the ratio of the CBD:THC remains the same thru out the life cycle of the plant, once the plant starts to flower. I have run some test on our current crop, at 4 weeks of flower and they came in fairly high (8% CBD). I expect that the finished product will test about the same. We will find out in a couple of weeks. I will have them tested after harvest to confirm this. Up till now, I have not paid for tests to explore the optimum time to harvest. If the ratio stays the same then I am going for the biggest yield. Typically, I harvest at 30-40% amber on the trichomes. Typically, I find that CBD rich strains take a little longer to develop. We harvest Cannatonic at 11 weeks while Resin Seeds says it is a 9-10 week strain. Cannatonic in particular, is a slow developing flower and does not put on any weight till the very end of its life cycle.

People have reported that letting the crop go longer before harvesting will develop into a heavier indica, producing couch lock. This is true for most recreational strains. I believe that it is not the CBD, but other cannabinoids, that develop, to produce this effect. If the ratio of CBD:THC stays the same, then it is not the CBD that is making the difference.

Currently, Synergy Wellness has flowers in stock of Harlequin (5% cbd), Cannatonic (8.1% cbd), Omrita Rx3 (9.5% cbd) and Sour Tsunami (7.5% cbd). We make tinctures of these strains also.

We have live plants available for these strains, both clones and teens. We are in the Bay Area, North California.
We also have a few new CBD rich strains we are growing that preliminary testing shows promise. These include a cannatonic x Sour Tsunami, Harlequin x Sour Tsunami, Swiss Gold. We just acquired ACDC, reported to have 20% CBD with a 20:1 ratio CBD:THC. They will be available for Christmas. :)
