growing big plants

So i'm flirting with the idea of growing larger plants (veg 8 weeks). How much longer will they need to flower before harvest as opposed to something veged for 1-4 weeks. What are the advantages/ disadvantages of growing larger as opposed to smaller plants?

it depends on strain if they stretch alot during bloom, then it depends on room you have usually i start to bud when there 3 feet

You'll need better lights for bigger plants. If you're going with big tall boys, you'll need either supplemental side lighting, or some 400W+ to penetrate down into the plant.

So say hypothetically I was working with 20x 1000 watt HID lights in 600 sq ft am I better off growing 40 r 50 big tall guys or several hundred smaller plants? Would yields differ greatly?

I too am in the process if growing (three) big ones but they are outdoor . I am worried they will not finish flowering before the first cold snap. Can I force them to flower early if I switch the feed to bloom formulas in late August? Two are brainstorm and are 4 ft veg. I also have a mystery plant whose seed came from a bag of mid, that one blew up with auxiliary stems and is re-greening as of a month ago (now in veg).

Well, I hope you're using less light that than, because you'd be reported by the electric company for having a consistent $800+ electric bill. Unless you're growing in a warehouse, 20K worth of lights is way too much and will draw lots of attention.

The advantage of a sog setup (100s of small plants) has is that you can take clones and drop them immediately into flower after they've rooted. It has a high plant count, which is bad, but a faster turn around and doesn't require separate lights for vegging, which is good. Sog usually has a higher overall yield per square foot than larger individual plants because you get more top colas per square foot. With scrog, you can turn multiple colas on the same plant into top colas by spreading them out horizontally.

If you really want to maximize yield per plant, go for a scrog setup. About 1 plant per square foot. Lighting should be very close to the top of the scrog, and you're shooting for about 30W per square foot. You can use smaller wattage bulbs to get closer. A 150W HPS can be about 3" away from plants without burning them if you have reasonable airflow. For tall plants, or a sog, you'd need about 50W per square foot, but with scrog you gain a lot of efficiency by having so much more of the plant right by the light. Also, it keeps the plant count down versus sog which requires a ton of plants.

20,000 watts in 600 sq ft is out of my understanding. I can't quite comprehend that much light. anyone else want to take this?

Damn 20x 1000watt Hid Lights? How much that cost you? You'd think if you were dropping that kinda cabbage you'd know how to grow.

Even 1000watters are only gonna penetrate 3 feet or so. Vertically hung bulbs are the way to go with trees. 4-5 around each light or a large recycling dwc arranged in rows with lights(x) plants(0) in this pattern.

6foot trees in this pattern should yield huge. They do for me.
This also keeps your plant count down. Less time in the pen.

good idea thanks!..i'll be in touch as i put this together

Well, all I will say is this. 20k watts... if you plan on running that many watts in your house.. your stupid. period. Secondly, that much wattage.. your going to blow some transformers for sure.. not to mention the fire hazard it would create. Thirdly, the electric company is GOING to SEE the MAJOR fluxuations with the difference between the energy being used at the house with lights ON.. and the lights OFF times. Your going to get busted.. IMO. It's just too many watts..

Also, 20k watts... ehh I kinda find this hard to believe in the first place.

but hey.. if your dumb enough to try it.. then I think you deserve to get caught IMO.

*shakes head* *sigh...*

Keep things simple.. that's the idea. Keep things simple.. to where nobody has any idea that your growing... but yet simple enough to yield enough bud by harvest time.. for your personal usage.

That's my 2cents worth.

peace.. oh.. and.. LMAO... Good luck to ya's. Your gonna need it!
