morning.. I'm lookin at gettin the 1000 watt Grow tent from HTG Supply.. Instead of doin the 1000 watt light, I was gona see what kinda price they'd giv me for 2x 600 watters in there.. !! :-D anyways.. Question at hand is, instead of getting one the air cooled hood's.. Could I get away with running just the batwing reflectors they supply.. I figured it'd be cold enuff this winter in the garage that'd keeping a vent slightly open would could keep the temps down.. is my theory correct.. ?? Thanks guys.. I just wanted sum input before I called em up today..

It's going to get expensive heating it during lights out. I would not want to try to control atmosphere in a unheated michigan garage man, I think it's going to be a bitch. I've never tried it so hopefully someone else here can chime in that has possibly tried it.

As far as lighting 2 600's un-cooled will get hot but you're going to be battling the outside cold air. A 400 cfm fan is going to be drawing a LOT of ice cold air into the tent. That may cause problems itself.

In a tent that size in perfect environments, I would run a 600w HPS and a 400w CMH and rotate my plants under the CMH daily.. You would end up with some Daaaank.. Matter of fact I'll be adding a CMH to my grow next run. I've been supplementing with 6500K but the CMH has that spectrum nothing can compare to except the sun.

Sorry I went way off topic from your question, I think an unheated garage in MI is a bad idea though man..

First off, HTG supply sells junk, you can get better deals at other stores if you shop around.
If you are shopping price and not quality it will cost you twice as much over the long run.

Secondly, you want air cooled hoods so you can vent the heat outside of your tent to keep the surrounding area warm.
What you are going to want to do is wall off the grow area with either foam panels or at least plastic from floor to ceiling.
Run a small space heater on an alternate schedule.. The area will cool down a few hours after the lights shut off.
So have a heater turn on 2 hours after lights go off and turn off right before lights turn back on.

2 600 watters for 12 hours will keep the outside area at about 70 while running.

Invest in a snap together floor too, you can get the panels at lowes for about $6.50 each make sure the area under your tent is covered. They are about 2x2 with rubber backing and interlock . This will keep your pots from taking up the cooler temps from the floor. (I do this in my basement, it protects my tents for any possible water/fluids as well)

Now at the "grow show" they also give valid card holder an additional 15% off of their purchase and will price match for you which if done right will save you even more. They also have an exchange replacement service if the equipment they sell you ever fails, none of that we'll send it out and you wait bullshit.

My friends and I can rack up $3000 worth of supplies and walk out of their paying less then $2000.

The choice is all your. If you start setting up the space out in the garage now by the time it gets really cold out you should be more the ready to deal with it and the cost won't hit you all at one time.

This winter I'll be switching my flower tents to run opposite of one another to maintain proper temps.
In a 12 x 12 room a couple of 600's will mantain a good temp while the lights are on, so by running them opposite I will be able to keep the temps up 24/7.. I'll run my 1000 watters at night since it gets colder.

I grow in a cinder block building and do not plan on turning on the heat this winter.
I get plenty from my lights.

Tip, in a garage you can cut some 2x 4's to fit tight between the floor and ceiling to the point you have to tap them in place with a hammer.
Just two coming off of corner walls will give you a door way as well as ends for walls.

Staple up one side of the door way and a few velcro tabs will work on the other side.
Poof you have a room.

I have a real good family, so far I have about $800 towards grow eqiupment.. thanks to one of my cousin's.. :-D I was entertaining building my own little grow room out in the garage.. Buildin a frame out of 2x4's, using OSB for walls and using sum of that pink panther rolls of insulation between the walls.. That was 1st initial plan.. Save what money I had towards a grow tent & build a simple cheap OSB grow box.. & put any left over money towards the rest of the equipment.. Decisions decisions decisions.. LoL..

I use tents because it helps me maintain complete control over their environment, along with their reflective value they offer.
Lost to consider man lots to consider.

I bet you could build a 4x8 closet for $200...possibly insulate it to. Now if you have an attached garage, you might be able to connect to your homes heating and cooling duct work.

If you really want a tent, just build one out of pvc and black/white poly. You can also build your own carbon filter. DIY projects save you alot of money, and stimulates creativity.

Yea I kno.. I like DIY projects.. Gives a person a sense of accomplishment.. !! lol.. Maybe after I get the hang of indoor gardening & past this 1st Med grow I'll be more apt to a DIY project.. I already want to add sum either 2x2's or 2x4's to the ceiling to re-enforce it.. These skinny poles just don't seem sturdy enuff.. !!

When growing high quailty cannabis, it is all about CONTROLING the envierment. Your house is the easyest to cantol the enverment, but if you have to grow in a garage, I would sugest building a room in it , insted of just a tent. I would run your lights in cool tube, and vent it into your room, than it will use the day time temps to heat at night. My room is outside with no heater, I just have it set up so it hold my day time heat and uses it at night time
