Grassy Smell Still

I hung my girls up to dry for 3-4 days in my dark tent with a fan on but not pointed at them. I read that once I could smoke a joint with out it going out they are ready for jars. So I cut the buds off the stems and put them in sealable containers. I let them sit in the containers for several hours before putting the lids on. I then put the lids on for 12 hours, then took the lids off for an hour of so. I do this twice a day. I'm on day three now and they still don't smell the way I'd like. They have a grassy smell to them. Is this normal? If I continue to do this process are they going to start to smell like I want? My last grow I made the mistake of not curing at all. After hanging them for several days I put them in containers. As I'm sure most of you would expect they were moist by the morning. Then I just left them sitting out all night and day to dry which they did but that grassy smell never went away. My buds weren't as nice that time as they are now so I want to make sure I'm going about it the right way.

Thanks!!

did you trim off all the fan leaves? what was your temp and humidity? a hay smell usually means it was dried in too hot of an area and/or there is too much leaf left on.

curing is totally optional but i start my cure when my stuff is dry enough to smoke but still a little wet. open the jar every day for fresh air. keep at around room temp 68F. if your stuff seems too wet, open the jar several times a day. keep a very close eye on it. somtimes when smoke dries too fast it seems like it is dry and ready for a cure but after letting it sit a while it becomes wet again from the inside moisture slowly absorbing to the outside.

a quick fix i like for hay smelling buds that works ok is place your buds on a clean surface in the open in a cool area. works best on a raised screen for better air circulation.

there are a lot of variables to consider when drying. check your elements and setup to battle against them for optimal conditions and production.

I did trim off the fan leaves before hanging them up. Temps were and are around 70 degrees.

Isn't that part of the curing process? It definitely got moist after it was dry but I was expecting that I thought that was part of the process?

After they were dried this way, would I then start the curing process and put them back in the sealable containers?

Thanks for your feedback!!

I've read lots of different things about curing and I understand it. However I need someone with experience to tell me if what's going on is normal or not. So my specific question is: Is the fresh, not so weed like smell normal? They've been curing now for less than a week but it doesn't seem to be getting better. I have patience but I wonder if the end result is going to be what I want. Someone please answer me!!! I'm desperate!!!! I don't want all my hard work to go to waste.

Thanks

The smoke and high will not suffer, the smell however, from what I read, is sometimes due to too many leaves being trimmed off before they hang to dry. I have always done this and my smoke smells like that hay feeling too. This time around I am going to try not trimming anything but the big fan leaves before they dry.

Do you have a humidity checker that would fit in the container of the buds? The link above to a perfect cure everytime shows you what humidity levels you want.

I hope this helps a bit..

Really? I've read the opposite. That trimming most of the sugar leaves before hanging is the way to go. I definitely trimmed off most the leaves before hanging them up. I'll have to try not to next time. Does anyone else have experience with this?

I have a thermometer that displays the humidity. I guess that would fit in their containers. I'll stick it in and see where there at.

I hope this helps a bit..
Any feedback is helpful! The internet is great for information the problem is that there's too much conflicting info out there and it's hard to find info on exactly what I have going on and whether or not it's normal.
Thanks!

Something that I haven't mentioned yet is the fact that my buds are still moist. They haven't completely dried out. So back to my original question is this "not so weed like" smell going to go away and the dank smell we want going to be more as I continue to cure or is the smell of my crop simply fucked?

Hey bud,

The smell *should* get a little better as the drying processes go on. Take a look at that thread another member linked. It should help you get these things smelling better by controlling the humidity levels! If they are still moist you have better a chance to correct it than if they were too dry, no going back at that point!

Just a thought, I just got some Boveda Packs, suppose to keep humidity at 62%. The company makes humidity packs for cigars but designed the 62% packs for cannabis curing- supposed to be the perfect % of humidity? Anyway I'm trying these in jars with buds have been dried to the curing stage. I have read some good things about these. My buds already have a really good smell to them and a good taste, I'm hoping after curing with the B. P. it'll make it even better. One good thing with the packs is you don't have to burb your jars- the packs raise and lower humidity. Figured ill try it out.

Where did you pick these up? I feel like I heard about something like this a few years back or even on Overgrow many years ago. Sounds promising.

i've had the same problem a couple of times. the last time the buds were still too damp a few days after jarring. i remembered reading about a paper bag drying method. the buds were put into a pan and then into a paper bag and shut tight for about a day and a half. worked great. buds back into jars and about a week later it smelled great and cured perfectly. I got mine from Amazon, but Boveda has a website. Just Google them. Make sure you get the 62%. They come in different, size packets also. Their website has a chart with the different sizes for different amounts (grams) of buds per jar. I'm hoping they work, it'll save me the time of burbing plus your buds will be safe from mold for a very long time.

Yep, same same, sick of burping and got a good deal @ Amazon. A buck a piece, 2 mediums per quart jar. A couple of my co-ops use these in their jars and I read the "other perfect cure" thread. So like BWG707, I'm a tryin' something new this season. :blsmoke:

I have tried every method period. Your problem is you trimmed the leafs first. LEAVING THE LEAFS
ON PULLS THE MOISTURE OUT FROM THE INNER BUDS AND STEMS SO IT DRIES EVENLY.
otherwise its to dry on the outside and wet in the inside you then put it in a jar and it evens out and
then is to wet causing a grass smell.

Dude youre making it more complicated than it is, make sure your buds are dry. The stem should still have moisture in it... I do a full plant 4-5 day dry, trim and paper bag it for 2-3 days. At this point my rh is usually around 63, i jar it burping for a half hour once or twice a day until it gets to 60 then once every 3 days until it gets down to 55, this is for a dry climate.... If you live in a humid climate add 3-4 more days to the dry and leave in bag for 3-4 days
Have room Circulation but not a fan blowing on the plant

i used to be so paranoid about is it too wet, is it too dry? Just make sure the buds are dry and NOT brittle
