I use hardware cloth or steel lath from Home Depot. It's easier to work with, it's not rolled up. Can you collapse the hole? I have a straight pick that I slam into the ground to collapse the tunnels and large living areas. Pack the ground and then water it again and put the cloth or lath down and throw some dirt back on top. You can always shove your pets crap down the hole, my neighbor did that and the rats moved onto the other neighbors!
