I don't know what kind of strand this is, or how long It will take to budd. I am going on three weeks today. Can anyone tell by the pictures?
I only have 10 more inches tell my lights at max highth. They have been growing about two inches a day. It semes like they dont get any taller intell i move the light. Are they chasing the light? what is a safe distance for a 400watt HPS?

they are stretching to catch the light... keep a steady flow of fresh air blowing (oscillating fan) and lower the light. 18 -22 inches above the canopy

yeah you'd like to lower the light, but i see signs of heat stress and/or too low RH already. Lowering the light will make it worse. You may be between a rock and a hardplace there. The way I see it you need two more fans. One blowing cool fresh air IN on the floor, and one blowing hot air OUT from the top of the doorway. Or get a cooltube, it would be perfect for you. You have the possibility of a helluva harvest there, I wish you well.

What is there...4 plants? I'll give you 2 z's a piece, give or take 1 z a piece. get a cool tube and make it give. It would only take like 1/2 oz a peice gained to pay for a cool tube and i think you would gain that easily using one because you could get your plants closer to the light, and they'll grow better with cooler temps. Of course you didnt mention your temps but I think they're high by the looks of your leaves (edges curled up) and your closet with no visible air exchange, just a circulating fan IN the closet swirling hot air around from the self ballasted HID. Is that a self contained light/hood/ballast? If it is you could shave several degrees by removing the ballast, adding a length of wire and putting it out side the closet. I know what is like to do a closet grow...part growroom part sauna LOL

ya wut he said..if u could get a cool tube..or even use that reflector and air cool it to the max so u can touch ur hood with out any ill effects and get down to keepn the hood 6'' off ur canopy u'd yield way more...looks like a sativa dominant hybrid..jsut a guess..im sayn 8zips if u get it right

It temp stays around 83 late day. AT the bottom i have an air hockey table fan for my intake, polling air conditioned air in. My exhaust is a blower I took off my wood stove. and then the little 6 inch fan oscillating the air.

83 degrees? where? are you taking temp readings from different locations?
Below my canopy the temp is 70. AT canopy level its 85. a thermometer placed 10 inches above the canopy and 10 below the light reads 95+. BIG differences. I'm going to make a DIY cool tube (well im going to try), but I don't like those Bake-a-rounds, they're too damn small. The diameter is less than 4 inches. You have to leave one end open and draw air from the cab to use it. With a real cooltube you can draw air from OUTSIDE the cab over the light and out the other side. That way is WAY more effective AND now you can do things like add c02 without the cool tube suckin it out your cab. I'm not saying the Bake-A-Rounds's are useless just pointing out some deficiencies.

I am a newbie so all this information vary help full.
So all i would need is a ballas, socket and cooltub, what watt should i get?

Here is a better look at my ventilation system. I need more air movement, any Ideals. I was thinking about putting the 6inch fan on the floor between my ladies , and mounting a 8inch on the wall osculating.
The last pic is the super fat yeild of my first run, 10 plants one female.:wall:

WOW 10 plants and only 1 female, thats wicked bad luck! I've had 6 out of 10, then 2 for 2, then 2 outta 3, then 3 outta 4 female. Damn did i just jinx my next grow! LOL NAh i got a fem clone now. Whew....
Anyway....its up to you if you want to swap out your current light/ballast/ hood setup for a cooltube light with remote ballast. Cooltubes aren't cheap. And the setup you have IS working for you. You may just decide to tweak your current setup a bit. That is what i would do.
The self contained (ballast/light/hood) setup you have is going to have a relatively short lifespan (because of excessive heat & thats another reason why a remote ballast setup is better). So I would use it untill it dies and THEN i would get the cooltube. But thats just me. For now I would do what i said before...put an ocsilating fan on the floor blowing in. and something in the top of the doorway blowing out. That should shave several degrees off the overall average temp in the closet. My 1st grow (in a closet) i was constantly tweaking the aerodynamics moveing the thermometers around taking readings , moveing/changing fans and trying to see what worked best. I dont have that closet anymore (i moved), i have a grow tent now. temps have been good sofar but summer hasn't turned up the heat yet, but i know its going to get hot, so thats why I'm working on a DIY cooltube. I'm also working on a DIY carbon filter that I may share with RIU in the DIY forum if I'm pleased with the final product.
This is what I did with my closet....

I put this fan in the top of the doorway blowing the hot air out. with a small oscillator on the floor blowing in. It worked much better than anything else I tried. What do you think about that?

I have a duel fan like that, but i am also trying to keep the smell in my attic. You cant smell it in my house, my garage and attic is a smelly.
Here is a pic of what i did for the time being. trying to push the hot air up.

Ok so you're venting into your attic? I missed that somehow.? that should be doing the trick for you maybe you just need a few more CFM through that vent.
