Gnats

Hello I came home the other day and saw nats all over my grow area, is the best way to get rid of these guys by putting sand on top. Also when I harvest will I have to worry about picking the dead nats out or will they fall offimage.jpg
 
I've got gnats also. right before feeding if I rake my fingers across the soil to level it out before watering Gnats come flying up out of the soil.

Please for the love of god can some one suggest multiple steps to cure this.

I've have sticky traps, (but ill get more). Which ones work best please and thank you?

Mosquito dunks I've try'ed that with no success now going on 2 weeks and there as bad as ever.

Not sure if I'm doing it right though. I water with gallon jugs aired out for clorine reasons. When i put the water in i break off a piece of mosquito dunks grind it up with my fingers into smaller BB sized pieces and drop it in the jug and let soak. Then pour onto the plant days later when time to water.

Still Gnats everywhere. Please help me correct my process, if that is the problem?

Or please make other suggestions. I need to do any and all soon to stop these critters.

I've also herd spraying the soil to create a layer off bug killer on the soil works as well. Any thoughts on that? If it does work please whats the best bug spray to use? when to apply and how often.

Once again please help and thanks for any suggestions or comments made.
 
Sprinkle ground cinnamon on top of soil, then cover with bout an inch of play sand problem solved.
The cinnamon screws up the larvae, and the sand prevents adults from laying new eggs.
 
Awesome young man thank you 2 questions.

1. How much cinnamon (light dusting or lots).

2. Any chance of it affecting taste or smell of the plant. If so thats a good thing I love cinnamon.
 
I had a severe gnat invasion. Lasted few weeks. Got really annoying!!! I used a gallon jug of water mixed with tarantula liquid microbes from an and great white powdered microbes. They were gone in i think a week. Crush the dunks into powder and mix well. Also, i used high doses cause i was so frustrated n i rec doing the same. Crush up a few dunks n water em in. But my method def works fast!
 
I use great white already may need to get some of that Tarantula. How much of the round dunks would you use in a gallon of water.1/4 dunk 1/2 dunk hole thing?

If the dunks didn't have any effect you need to make 100% sure you don't actually have winged root aphids.
 
Agree with snaps here. If dunks had no effect you just might have the worst pest imaginable. I have them, and they are no joke...

The root aphids have wider bodies and their wings extend further behind their bodies. They have less of an hour glass shape. And of course they have the 2 horns or "dual exhaust" on their rear. I won't even try to tell you how to deal with them. They are the devil incarnate! If you want to check to see if you have them put down some duct tape adhesive side up on the floor of your grow in a few different spots. Give it 12-24 hours and check with a magnifier or jewelers loupe.

Good point! Great white should knock em out! You need id the pest your dealing with. Catch one n put up pics. Those aphids look nasty! Sorry to hear.
 
Yeah, they are disgusting little creatures... I have no signs of deficiency yet, I am shutting down the grow for the summer so hopefully I can eradicate them.

Identification is important, make sure you know what you are dealing with!
 
I've always wondered what would happen if you release a horse fly into the grow area? In the south we have horse flies, they look like a mosquito on steroids but they eat gnats, I watched one on my back porch the other night eat about 6 or 7 in about 2 minutes.
 
For me Azamax is the the best. One treatment will get rid of an infestation. Still they are a big pain in the ass and azamax cost a shit ton. But now i have solved all my bug problems 100%. Have not had gnats or aphids in over a year. Would you like to know how? Its easy if your growing indoors and dont live in a barn. Heres what i did. Harvested all my plants bleached my room let it sit empty for 7 days. Now i only bring in promix or heat treated potting soil. That has solved my bug problem completely. Even FF or other high end soils are contaminated. Take your soil heat at 200 degrees(f) for 30min in the oven or 90sec on high in the microwave. Best option is use promix IMO.
 
Agreed on the contaminated soil. This is one reason for large scale growers to completely avoid soil and use hydro. Pro Mix HP is good stuff though. The FF I wouldn't put in my yard.

I disagree on how easy it may or may not be to eradicate aphids.
 
Azamax is great. Really is. But it cost a lot. i have only tried it on a minor infestation of aphids. But it worked well on the gnat larva. But yea it took me a couple years of banging my head against the wall to figure that out and just use a soiless mix. I really wish i would have done that from the start.
 
Thing is, I have never seen one product eliminate Aphids. At least not if there were winged flyers present. Even using Orthene to sterilize the entire area and all equipment seems to let a few escape. Of course my experience is in large grows, aphids might be easier to 100% cleanup in a smaller area like a tent.

Orthene isn't 100%
Imidacloprid isn't 100%
Flonicamid isn't 100%

Neither is AzaMax.

All are great components for plugging into an effective aphid control rotation imo. Especially with AzaMax being drench compatible.
