GFCI outlet is functional but showing unprotected

I wired a GFCI outlet to a new circuit breaker yesterday. The GFCI outlet has a light on it that indicates whether it is protected or not. Currently it is lit red, which is unprotected. I pulled the outlet n double checked my wiring and all seems correct there. I then rechecked my breaker wiring which I followed what was done in the box, black to breaker, white to neutral bar, and also ground to neutral bar. There is a ground coming in from the outside box to that bar, and also a ground wire that runs from the neutral bar, out of the breaker box and is clamped to a water pipe in the house. The outlet functions with a radio plugged in but the lack of protection worries me a bit and not having it protected defeats the purpose of buying a GFCI. any ideas? do i leave it as is and take a chance since it is functional and breaker protected?
