General questions...

For those of you who havent seen my previous posts or journal, hi, i am Green Troll, and i am green in more than one way ;)

I have started my very first grow from seed, and while my little babies grow, i have been doing some rather solid research in various methods of growing. Mainly looking at the most efficient way of getting great results.

Now i started out using coco, but now i am looking at hydroponics. I have 5 seedlings currently, in coco, so my chance to use rockwool etc has passed.

So here is the plan. I want to grow my current 5 plants into mothers, all of them (so long as i dont have any sickly plants), and take 1-2 cuttings from each to not stress them out, and flower the clones.

So my questions are these:

1) Since i have started growing in coco, is it a bad idea to put a clone through a different medium than the mother is used to? Is the genetics of the plant accustomed to coco now?

2) If so, what are the side effects of changing mediums?

3) I was told in a hydroponics store that coco is technically a hydroponic medium, is this true? It doesnt sound right to me.

4) I am currently aiming at a PH of 6.5 but i am told hydro solutions should be around 5.8, will the clones be used to the PH the mother was brought up on? Will this cause stress/problems?

Now for some other general questions

5) Do plants vegging give out a smell? Say you have a nice, big, strong 3 months old mother plant you always keep in veg, does it still smell of weed? Or is it only when it flowers?

6) When my mother gets big, and she gets pot bound, can she stay that way and still be healthy? Does being pot bound ONLY mean she will stop growing any larger? or will she get stressed?

7) If she does get stressed, does this effect the genetics of the clones?

The strain i am growing is Super Iced Grapefruit. Thanks guys. As always, +rep for helpful answers.

Just thought of another one

8) When can i tell that my plants are no longer seedlings and they are ready for nutes? Is there a typical leaf count?

with your name and avatar, you are going to have a really.....REALLY hard time getting people to talk to you.

just a heads up.

Its kinds like all the "slut" marches in Canada and Europe. Sure you can dress like a slut if you want to, and if you want us to stop telling you that its the reason you are being raped we will. But its not going to change anything.

with a name like green troll and your avatar you basically asking to be raped, metaphorically speaking.

as for your questions:

1)no, all your clone knows is that its stem/lifeline has been cut, you have to help it restart as a new independent plant.
2)none (if transplanting it might take a few days to get settled again)
3)i don't like it for hydro, i use expanded clay for hydro.
4)no, it all has to do with nutrient uptake, it happens different in soil and hydro.
5)only slightly, you can smell them but they only slightly smell like weed and its not strong or penetrating at all.
6)root bound is bad if left long, plant health will start trailing off.
7)no (some will argue)

As far as # 6) goes, you can always "trim the roots". If any plant (especially mothers or fathers) gets to target size and is, or is in danger of becomming, root-bound the following process should be repeated periodically; as needed. This need only be done when there is a "massive" amount of visable roots.

1. Unpot the plant (as if you were transplanting) and hold it in the palm of one hand, with the stem between two fingers. You can also use a flat board with a notch cut into it, placed between your hand and the "soil". If you're in really big pots (5 gals. +) you'll have to figure out what will work for you, sorry.
2. Take a sharp knife (I suggest a serrated "Bread Knife") and trim off about 3/4" to 1", all the way around the sides, even the bottom. As a matter of fact you may want to take an extra 1/4" off the bottom.
3. Add a layer of fresh soil mix to the bottom of the old pot, a little thicker than what you removed (to allow for settling). Then fill in around the sides. Don't tamp it down too much, allow the new soil to settle on it's own and add new soil around the top outter ring.
4. Water immediately.

Coco is indeed a hydroponic medium. it does not release any nutrients of its own.

It depends on the strain, but all my veging plants have smelled.

Hydro pH is best in the mid-to high 5s, yes.

Finally, stressing should have zero genetic effect. Only, only way to change genetics is by making new phenos (via seed). cn

Thanks for the answers and +rep, but i dont know how to respond to that to be honest...just wow...

I think it would be rather pathetic for anyone to judge me or my grow on some name i picked because i didnt want to use my common screen name. But if people have that sort of poor attitude and are that close minded, probably best they dont talk to me =)

Thanks to all, +rep
