Foxfarm Ocean Forest Question...

OK, I have finally decided to get some Foxfarm Ocean for my next grow. I have been using Miracle Grow until I actually learned what to do. Well, I have not exactly learned what to do but I am going to start my grow with Seed bank genetics and figured I need good soil as well. This will be my 3rd grow...1st without using bagseed.

These are my questions...
1. Do I need to add anything other than Perilite and Dolomite Lime?

2. Are there enough nutes to get me through my 3 weeks of seedling growth?

I germed 3 Afghani seeds and 3 White Widow Feminized. Soaked them for 18 hours then planted them in Jiffy starters and 24 hours later, 1 Afghan has already popped. I need to get my soil mixed so it can be ready by the time I need it. Any and all suggestions as to what will take this Foxfarm to the next level.

I also need to order my nutes but I am still undecided. First things first...Good Soil! :hump:

Yeah Foxfarm soil is so much better than MG. I used MG for like half of a grow until I finally got some Foxfarm and transplanted half way through vegg. My plants are SO much more happy now :).

All I added was a little perlite and the right amnt of dolomite lime. So..... it worked for me!

And with Foxfarm, it'll feed your plants for a good three weeks definitely... the shit is badass.

As far as fertilizers go.. I use foxfarm products as well. haha. Gro Big and Big Bloom.

hoped that helped

Thanks Chelsea for the suggestion on nutes. I have looked at the Foxfarm nutes but I have not pulled the trigger. I like Pure Blend Pro as well as Technaflora starter kit. I like the idea of enough nutes for one grow for 25 bucks. At this point in my experience I just want "samples" and if they suck, I ain't out 50 bucks. If they are great, then I have hit a homerun. The proper nutes is my Holygrail.

I have used MG in my first 2 grows and have all sorts of small problems. I really don't know how much of that is my fault and how much is the soils fault but I will find out soon. I have managed to get through 2 grows and I was very happy with my results using Bagseed but I have high expectations with this grow.

Any more advice on the Foxfam Ocean? Some secret ingrediate that someone will pass along?

Ocean Forest is quite strong. If you're doing a bunch of planting, you might mix in FF light warrior 1:1. It has a lot of perlite to help drainage and is not quite as 'hot' as far as soil goes.

You're going to want to be careful when you first start adding nutrients, as there is quite a bit in the soil already. You also don't need to add to much lime, as if I remember correctly there is already lime in the OF. There is lime in the Happy Frog, anyway.

I use botanicare pro grow and bloom. It's not too expensive. You'll have enough for several plants for 2 x $17.

Ceestyle, thanks for the heads up! Can I use Happy Frog instead of Warrior? My Hydroshop is currently out of Warrior.

I can hold off the Lime if thats necessary. I also plan on using plenty of Perilite. I mixed my MG with a 2 MG/1 Perilite and the root mass was impressive...at least to me. I also used Superthrive but won't with Foxfarms.

From my research, I don't plan on using nutes until well into Veg unless my plants tell me otherwise. Oh, one more thing...Do I understand correctly that FF Ocean is a complete soil and I don't need to use other "additives" like more worm castings...Bat Guano...Kelp?

Thanks for everyones help. I planted my WW...Afghan...and Thai on June 3 (my birthday) and I checked a minute ago and I already have 2 Afghan and 1 WW popping through! It's only a matter of time before I need my "magical" soil. :hump:

Happy Frog is somewhere between Ocean Forest and LW, containing some perlite. I use OF cut about 1/3 with perlite, as I like very good drainage. It's hard to OD with lime, but it can be done. I went with about half my normal dosage, making about 1tbsp per gallon if i remember correctly. All of those soils are complete, containing both castings and guano, IIRC. I seem to hear of people claiming the OF can be somewhat strong, although I've heard just as many that use it straight up form seedling with excellent results. I prefer to start weak, as I can always add nutrients as I need them.

Good luck with your grow. Nice strains. Start a journal.

ceestyle, props to you. Thats the type info I was looking for. FF Ocean may be a tad strong but after 2 grows with MG, I think I am prepared for "hot" nutes. I am not going to bash MG like some. It is easy to find...cheap to buy...and allows anyone the chance to grow very good meds. The way I look at it, if you can have a successful grow with MG, you should be prepared for anything. :-D Seriously, using MG is not the horror story some make it out to be.

I would like to do a journal but my writing skills are lacking and my growing skills are worse. I grow my plants for the meds. I donate 50% of all my final yield to other people who need the meds. Maybe I could do a journal and donate the final yield to one of the "national dispensories" of RIU's choosing.

I know nothing about the strains other than what I have read on here. Thanks for the reassurance. I am stoked!

Hey guys, I was also wondering if the FF nutes are strong? What I mean, do you have to use at half strenght throughout the grow or can you acclimate your plants to these anad then go full strength? I am going to try and follow a grow schedule and was just curious.

Damn, choosing nutes is harder than I thought.

I think a lot of people use their nutrients as they prescribe, but the way to know if it's the right strength is to simply start at 1/4, then 1/2, etc., slowly working up to full strength.

Grow Big & Tiger Bloom seem to be pretty stout, this is good advice:

Big Bloom is pretty weak, use it as you see fit. The solubles (Open Sesame, Beastie Bloomz, & Cha Ching) seem pretty good, not quite as potent (prone to burn) as the liquids mentioned above.

Ocean Forest with perlite & soil sweetner (lime) has been nice to me (although I did start my seedlings in Black Gold Organic).

Thanks man. Thats the type of info I needed. 5 of 7 seeds have sprouted and I will be transplanting soon. Here's to a good grow. bongsmilie
