The chlorine can evaporate over time. A large ammount of any excess is actually supposed to be gone within 24-48 hours, however, if your girls are thirsty and you water or feed them in a solution containing high ammounts of chlorine, it won't take long to see the negative results. Even if it's only doing damage for 24-48 hours, that's 24-48 hours more damage than you want to do in the first place!
Tap water isn't going to contain an unhealthy amount of chlorine and will evaporate out in less than 1 hour.

Everyone's water source is different. The last location I lived, water was terrible and had to be treated. Where I'm at now, I get quality spring water and could prob get away with not filtering it. I just don't see why you wouldn't want to bare minimum run it thru a $20 filter that would prevent any potential excess of anything getting in?
