First Try at Growing!

So let me fill you all in on what the situation is. I found a mary j seed in my car and figured I'd attempt to germinate it for shits and gigs. Turns out it was a strong one and sprouted the little white tail. I got it in organic soil but since I didn't think it would go anywhere, I have it about a foot under your standard tubed fluorescent light that you can find in a school. Although I don't expect much, I still want to do everything I can to help this little guy along. I planted the germ'd seed three days ago and it has already sprouted! What concerns me is that the stem seems to be a little more brown than green and I'm not sure what is going on or if I should even worry at all.

Here are a few pictures I took just a few moments ago:

It's kind of similar to an unplanned pregnancy. I want to help this plant as much as I can but I don't have the money to invest in a light yet. What can I do? Help me out guys! What is the next step from where I am currently? What do I need to watch for?

Any and all advice/suggestions/tips are GREATLY appreciated.

As long as it breaks free from the shell, it's fine.
You can put that flouro light to within a couple of inches...

It is breaking free as you can tell by the pics and I am a little hesitant to move it any closer. Within 30 minutes, it had stood straight up and it appeared to have grown a decent amount in that 30 minutes because I couldn't see it over the top of the container until I got back from smoking a cig. A definite notice in growth.

I don't think the organic soil had nutrients so when should I introduce the fert?

wait a week or 2 for nutes, NPK 20-20-20... set your light at 24/0 18/0.. just not 12/12 yet.. thats on/off. and definitely lower that light like dude said, or else itll just stretch like crazy

Don't use fert until it has rooted properly, introducing fertilizer too soon may stress the young roots and burn them. I'd recommend waiting until it has spread its first set of fully shapes leaves before introducing ferts or nutes (when I germinate seeds i simply put it into coco peat with RO water until it has shown a lot of root growth, then I still wait a week before feeding it 1/4 strength nutes). Keep the soil MOIST, not soaked, the little one needs as much oxygen at the roots as possible and you don't want to drown the baby. If using a standard florescent light insure its COOL white and have it about 25cm from the light, if the plant is too far from the light it will make long inter nodes which isn't ideal (light disperses very rapidly over a short distance).

Hope this helps  happy growing

You all are AWESOME! This is all very helpful. I am relieved that I can put the nutes off for another week or two. The light is stationary so I had to do some more creative stacking to get it up to where it needs to be haha.

I just put the two binders on top of that tower of shit to get it around 25cm from the light.

My current container is a clear plastic tube approx 7in tall by 2in wide (at the mouth). I wrapped it in duct tape to prevent light from reaching any of the roots. I also have created holes in the bottom and sides for runoff. The bowl is to catch the runoff and I get rid of the runoff water as soon as I check it so that it doesn't cause mold. Like I said, this thing is like an unplanned pregnancy so I'm very under-prepared as y'all can see. My watering schedule is once every three days. Is that acceptable for this situation? As of now I am going with the full 24/0 cycle so that it can suck up all it can from the mediocre light. Let me know if you think the plant is too close now. I'm all ears.

water when the pots feel light in weight. they can seem dry on top, and be wet at bottom. getting the feel of the dry/wet containers is the best way to water, imo.

Hahaha that's some innovative stacking dude.. I'd go one step further and remover the light cover so that there is nothing between the bulb and the plant as the cover disperses the light slightly. Post a pic again in a week, would love to see the progress.

Hey all just giving an update. Everything seems to be going good! The plant has shot up over the past few days (approx 3-4 inches now) and looks good. It still has it's shell at the top though. Here's a pic:photo (5).jpg

My only concerns is that I haven't been getting it close enough to the light and maybe that's why it seems really long to me. Let me know your thoughts folks, everything is appreciated.

Its stretching because of the lack of light. You should surely get that cover off the light as Japes said, it does cut quite a lot out.
And this may be a time when you'll have to remove the shell casing by hand, which is a bitch of a delicate job!
But those leaves have to get themselves out some how or she'll die...

I read up about that and I was able to get the shell off with sterilized tweezers and a day later her big leafs spread out. Last night she fell over because the skinny stock couldn't support the big leaves it has now. I replanted her in the same container but buried her deeper and now she is straightening back out and standing up well. I haven't added nutes/ferts yet. Still straight organic soil and water and she seems to be doing fine (for the below average conditions it has to face). I still am running 24/0 lights. As far as the cover goes, I've tried to remove it, and I can't figure it out. I don't believe it is meant to come off and if it does it takes more force than I am willing to use. To sum it up I would say everything is going well now considering the circumstances. Growth would definitely increase should I ever get a HPS light but I like the pace it's at now. Easy to maintain.

Are you in a dorm or military barracks if so you got some "huge pollen sacks" because if you get caught it is a federal offense just a heads up and that baby is gonna give off lots of odor in the flowering stage which will get you caught up I say that because I can clearly see the commercial fire alarm in the pic try being a lil more discreet with you pics dude
