The bottom line is that feminized
seeds should be used more. Raising a plant for 5 weeks only to kill it is a huge waste of time and money.
That makes the $5 extra a seed worth every penny and more. Breeding (or pollen chucking) with feminized seeds is not only possible, it saves a lot of time. You can easily make your own feminized seeds. I have done it and I am not very bright, just informed.
To talk about "hermies" we should all be on the same page. There is a difference between a real hermaphrodite and a female plant that has produced male flowers. A real hermaphrodite will have both an X and a Y chromosome, which makes it dioecious. A female plant (from either a regular seed or a feminized seed) will only have Y chromosomes (monoecious).
Seeds from a dioecious hermaphrodite (which are somewhat rare) will produce plants that are either male, female or hermaphrodite.
Seeds from a female plant that has produced male flowers will be female as there is no Y chromosome to pass on.
Every female cannabis plant has the ability to produce male flowers (nanners). It is a normal and natural survival mechanism.
That does not make a plant a "hermie". There is no such thing as the "hermie trait."
Feminized seeds are just as likely to produce (monoecious) hermaphrodites as plants from regular seeds.
Regular seeds can produce actual (dioecious) hermaphrodites, although it is not common.
Feminized seeds can not produce real hermaphrodites as they do not have a Y chromosome.
Therefore,
regular seeds are more likely to produce hermaphrodites.
Feminized seeds that produce plants with male flowers are most likely the grower's fault (stress, over feeding, heat etc) and would have happened with regular seeds.
I am getting a bit sick of people asking "Is this a female?" Then telling me that feminized seeds "make hermies."
