First Time post & Grow, determined on second try.

I’m new, first time posting here. I managed to do everything wrong in trying to grow on my first attempt. When I learned about this board, I started reading and was so happy to have this as a resource, and after just a week, I decided and order $100.00 worth of seeds. I was so excited when they arrived ( I was worried the police was going to deliver them which they didn’t) . I put them between two wet paper towels and put them on a seedling warming mat. What I didn’t know is if you put the mat on a concrete floor it can get so hot it will bake the seeds. I kept watering them, and checked every day. After three weeks and nothing growing, I realized I baked the seeds the first night I had them. So I was out $100.00 and wasted a ton of time worrying. This is my first horrible time trying to grow some homemade medicine.

Phase two. I’m going to try to make a grow cabinet. I looked online and found a few that wanted $2,000 dollars and up for the cabinet. I think they look great, I just couldn’t spend that kind of money. I waited and eventually found a cabinet at Habitat for Humanity for $15.00 the only problem was it didn’t have doors. So after spending another 20.00 for some wood I made two doors with a lock in the front. I lined the cabinet with mylar and was stuck on how to make the air go in. Exiting air was easy. I made my own two foot carbon filter using a house filtrate air filter which was rated for smote, dander, odor , pollen etc. after adding about two boxes of activated carbon which I bought from Pet smart it was ready to go . Total cost for the carbon filter and inline fan was was 46.00 give or take a few cents. I found a 150 cfm The inline fan cost 10.00 at Habitat for humanity as well. I made an air intake system that filtered air as it came in and blocked light from going out. I made it with the extra door wood I had and bought the three fans with DC to AC converter from a local flea market for 15.00. The biggest expense was my light which I decided to go with LEDs because of heart issues. I bought a 300 watt, 3w LED light online which I guess was a no-named brand. I think the total cost was 210.00. So I think I have a total of about $320 invested. I'd later add a 100 watt CFL and second 125 watt CFL. so i guess all together I have 525 watts of lights.

I found the tents and stuff too expensive also, and did alot of DIY.

My DIY ended up costing me as much as a tent would of cost lol. I had to buy the tools to build it.

Next time don't germ all your seeds at once. Grow 1-3 plants for your first grow. That way you can learn how to read the plant before busting out all your seeds.

I heavily considered making my own tents just so I could get the exact dimensions I wanted and maximize the grow space, but it didn't make sense after adding up all the costs. Part of that is because my tents would have been so small and had to fit in my closet. As the room gets bigger the ratio of surface area to volume should diminish which should help keep costs down.

And towards the OP, don't over think it! Maybe place the seeds you want to germ inside the fridge for 24-48 hours before soaking them. Once that time's up drop 'em in a shot glass of dechlorinated, room temperature water for 12 hours. After that shove 'em about a half centimeter deep into some moist soil. Pretty much forget about them at this point. If you really can't sleep at night you can mist the tops with a spray bottle, just make sure light can't get into the spray bottle, you don't want shit growing in your water. A drop of peroxide or even bleach can help with this, but Plasti-Dip is an awesome rubber coating that comes in a rattle can and it can keep light out. Plus you'll probably use the stuff on a hundred other projects. ^^

The coating is durable as shit, too. That's just two coats, I could have gone four or six if I was worried.

I'm a little concerned about the off gassing from that product......it's basically undercoating right or no?

Plasti-Dip smells all sorts of bad as it dries and is even worse to breath in. If you get the dip stuff the chemical they talk about on the back of the can for thinner is even worse for you, it's bottled cancer, no joke. And it wouldn't surprise me if they were using said chemical inside the rubber solution for the rattle can version of the product because otherwise it'd be too thick to spray. Still, I love this stuff, its uses are limited to your imagination. Originally it was developed to rubberize the handles on hand tools such as pliers, screwdrivers, etc. so that gives you an idea about the durability of the product especially when it's thick. Its memory is pretty darn good too, I've used it to create negative molds of things so I could fill it with acrylic or JB Weld and duplicate solid components. [/END HIJACK]
