OK RIU, no more games with cfls. Doing it big now, 400w hps, nice hood with a cool tube, no in line fan yet unfortunatley. And this thing is fucking massive, I'm now using my whole walk in closet.
Nice upgrade dude! I am certain you won't regret it! Just be careful not to shock your girls by putting the HPS too close too soon. Just drop it a little closer each day to you reach your target distance, and add a fan pointing underneath the bulb until you pick up an inline. Good luck with the grow!

Thanks chronic, I was not aware that putting her under the hps could shock her. What distance should I start at, I have read that a 12-16 inches is a good distance to have them.

Well, I use a 600HPS without air cooling and aim for a final distance of between 16-18inch. So I guess your 12-16 inch seems about right with a 400HPS. I would probably put it 24 inch to start with and drop it 2 inch per day to your desired height. It gives your ladies time to adjust to the change in light intensity and heat emitted by the HPS without suffering shock. The fan aimed at or just under the bulb is very helpful in controlling heat stress and I would never be without one.

Thanks again chronic, I have a small fan blowing thru the cool tube, I also have a humidifier blowing over the canopy. And also a large box fan pulling air from my actual bedroom and blowing in over the canopy. So the temp around her canopy is perfect, I will definetly let that light down slowly, now that I am aware of the shock issue though.

what bulb are you using, if you didn't already say? sorry I kind of just skim thought some stuff.

I would recommend
http://www.amazon.com/Genesis-400-Watt-HPS-Bulb/dp/B00U0RVRDM/ref=sr_1_sc_1?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1463346555&sr=1-1-spell&keywords=400+watt+hps+geneiss+bulb

these where they last ones I was using on my SE 1000 HPS, I still use one of them but I really like them. the price is good too.
Wow thank you, I will definetly look into getting one of the better brand bulbs for my next grow.

I personally think hes doing it right, by taking steps.

unlike some people who buy thousands of dollars of stuff, and try and figure it all out.
400w is acceptable. I just don't like the idea of having to use a ballast and wiring a dedicated circuit. He could check the beginner LEDs (Mars 300w or 600w, for instance) for cheap. Either way, though.

Also airwalker was talking about my tiny cabinet my cfls were in, I have a huge walk in closet. With my door open my Temps are at max 80 degrees with the hps on. So yes my hps is to large for the small ass cabinet but not my massive closet.
Right. Still, I dunno about a kW in a closet. 600w, maybe. Unless it's a huge walk-in.
