First Time AF Grow

About time! My first real post, so take it easy on me, please...

So, I have already 1/2 sucessfully completed a grow which I did on my terrace last year. I say half because the plants did not meet their full potential and one of the three died a gruesome death as it was beginning to flower (I still don't know why and may never know, but am of course to blame). However, the other two survived and, despite my blundering parenting skills, survived to bloom into fully satisfying females, even though I am sure that they could have been much bigger and better, but they made the mark.

Unfortunately, I no longer have the outdoor terrace and have had to construct a makeshift grow cabinet which is very limited in space.

Because of space and time restrictions, I decided to try an auto after reading a lot about them and having also tried them firsthand...
I have one Royal Dwarf which was placed in soil to germinate on May 11th.

It was placed in a small Jiffy-type pot with local soil and placed outside in a place which receives about 6 hours of direct sunlight a day.
Just my luck, it rained quite a bit during the beginning and the temps were below normal, so the germination took about 10 days to take...actually, I lost a seed or two because of this...i've also done the paper towel method and it works for me but i thought i'd do it the old fashioned way...

On May 21st the first little sprout could be seen and it was left out in the sun with some watering when needed for another 7 days....

On May 28th, it was transplanted into an 11L (2.5 Gallon) square pot with Biobizz Light Mix as the soil. I have watered only once with a very diluted (1/4 or less) 6-6-6 common liquid fertilizer (I use it for other vegetables that I have and it always works).
The light that I'm using is a 200W Phytolite CFL Greenpower Agro (2100K) with a simple reflector and I have a white plastic sheet which I line the interior of the grow cabinet with to reflect the light...bear with me cause the grow cabinet i made with stuff i found in the garage...professional it ain't...

Without further explanation (sorry for the wall of text), here are some pix:

The lights are on a 18/6 schedule just because I have a reg White Ice plant growing on the side (hence the slant to the ballast due to the varying heights of the planters) and I want to see how that one plays out as well.

Well, give it to me...what should I / could I do better ? We're at maybe 18 days from sprout and 25 from actual planting...

Thanks to all...I've learned a lot just cruising the site and without this community, I wouldn't have ever gotten past the first grow!!!

Sir

your light wavelenght is off ......u are using flowering light the growth of the plant will be slowed by this .........autos do there own thing but they like mutli spec light 6500k and 2700k .................as for hours i am finding 22/2 for veggie and 20/4 for flower ...(berry ryder strain)

next time u do one ....jiffy plug with seed strait into the final container and grow from there ( own exps 1 in spourt using green house 3 inch sprout using this method)

u made out of stuff in the house .......look for old mirrors ...if u angle them so the light hits it and then reflects on to under leaves will help later

buddy u are going to have a massive smell issuse when they get near flowering u should do some work into figure out the method u want to controll this ( unless u can stink with pride then stink on man )

which is which ?
i reread the post im assuming the dwarf is on the left ?
they seem to be really dense nodes
stretch is not always a bad thing
you could try picking your light up higher for a couple days and then as they stretch start moving it closer
im having to do that with a la frutta di venus
that seems to be stacking nodes to close
its about the same age

and im possibly seeing a fire issue with the plastic
is the any way you can just paint the inside of the cabinet flat white ? it tends to do better then gloss white
and then just use the plastic on like the bottom 1/4 for a splash pan

No, the dwarf is actually the one on the right. the white ice is just a seeding on the left which i had to get started before i throw it outside...regarding the lights, I have raised them cause as you mentioned the nodes were real tight and dense...i'm hoping for a little stretch to lighten them out a bit. Thanks for the advice...

I thought about the fire issue with the plastic and had some anxious moments while I was at work just thinking about it but the light never gets that hot (thank god). I can even touch it without too much discomfort after it's been on for 18 hours...I say without too much discomfort because after about 1 minute it begins to sting a bit!

The light I choose because it was reccommended as a wavelength which was good for both flowering and vegetation. In fact, it emits (or so it says) 25% 6400K and 75% 2700K, so I thought I'd give it a try to see...I was trying to avoid having to buy two bulbs...lazy I guess

As far as the smell, it's already begun, but that's under control. It's only one plant and I can easily mask or filter the smell if need be. Thanks!

Auto's will do fine with HPS start to finish.
I've heard that as well, just didn't have the room and equipment (as well as electricty budget) for an HPS set-up. I was thinking that with the heat generated, a small box like the one I'm using would generate too much heat too quickly. Please correct me if I'm wrong!

I raised the lights a bit this morning as tekdc911 suggested. They are now about 10 cm (4 inches) from the top part of the plant:

DSCF9183.jpg

The little ICE plant may stretch because of this but she's gonna have to wait for her bigger sister to mature and once she moves out, the room will be all hers...until her daddy finds some other girls!

Here's a closer look at the Dwarf plant:
DSCF9184.jpg

As far as watering goes, I'm a wait and see kind of guy. I'll water when the leaves begin drooping or the soil looks very dry and/or the pot is light. Right now, the top part of the soil is dry but about halfway down the soil gets a bit damp and the plant doesn't seem to be suffering from lack of water so I'll leave it be...as far as nutes go, I'll give it a light kick when I water...any ideas to the contrary?

Quick question - if i change up the light schedule from 18/6 to 20/4 would it make much of a difference? Or should I just leave the lights be?
