The line from the old Steely Dan song....Some Cuervo Gold, Some Fine Colombian" made me remember I love the taste and high of Colombian Gold (which was redish and had a great smell and taste). Is that stuff still around?

what is available as colombian gold (or at least what is being pushed) is nothing more than a field weed. if you don't see something on a reputable seed site, then it is probably not openly available, and you should select from what is. there are some great strains out there, and even greater breeders. you just have to know who you're talking to.

hiya Gman, welcome to the site.

Good old Steely Dan, good old Columbian red and golds eh? You're fortunate you were around to try out some of those great strains in the 70's!

What I can tell you with 100% certainty - you will not get any pure bred Columbian Gold seeds to buy and grow - they simply don't exist - the Dutch breeders, where the majority of online Cannabis seeds come from, simply aren't interested in landrace derived Sativas that grow tall outside and have low yield. They're only interested in the Indica based hybrids that you can grow indoors under lights and produce decent yields from.

What you will find however is a number of strains with a genetic lineage that includes Columbian Gold. Skunk #1 is the most obvious choice, being the first truly stabilised hybrid it includes genetics from a Columbian Gold crossed with a Thai and Afghani. Skunk #5 is based on genetics from Afghani X (Acapulco Gold x Colombian Gold) X Dutch Skunk.

I've always been interested in growing out some Panama Red based genetics and there's a breeder in Australia called Wally Duck who does one which is a Cinderella99 x Panama Red cross which I'm quite keen to grow out at some time.

There's a lot of plant genetics out there to choose from and many will have a lineage going back to Columbian gold.

I am a total newbie and dont know how to gey these seeds in the US ( I would rather have clones) or clone to try to grow. I need some newbie (safe) help.

hey guys,

Newbie grower - just started a little home grow for the heck of it (wanted to see if I could do it).

I bought a 10-pack of Colombian Gold seeds from a local seed bank (Mods - if this is a no-no, please delete link) Vancouver Seed Bank

The description notes a cross with Indica for size management.

Some notes on what I've been doing with the seeds, for those interested:

As noted, the purpose of this 'experiment' was to see if a true newbie could blunder his way through a small grow.

I sprouted 4/4 seeds and planted them in peat blocks, transferring them to small peat pots with potting soil after the roots came through the peat.

It's been about 5 weeks since germination and the plants are about 12" high no fancy lights, feeding with normal plant food. Sadly 1/4 was a male, which I have sequestered from his sisters (still haven't decided if I should just compost it or save the pollen - I still have 6 seeds left).

I found your site to figure out how to tell the plant sex (thanks, btw), and to look into taking cloning cuttings (once they get bigger).

My 'operation' is really microscopic, so I won't post much, if at all - I just thought you might like to hear from the perspective of someone who is truly clueless, but in this to amuse myself (and to grow my own bud for the winter).

Thanks again for the great resource!

I do not think that came from Mexico.

The crap I have seen that comes in from down there is usually brown ditch weed that tastes like hay and gives me a headache.

Look like Mexican redhair middies. Its the same stuff and commercial mexican red hair dirt weeed except they take a little better care and dont use the pnuematic brick compressor on it to brick it.Decent stuff for the money usually $300-400 a lb cheaper in bulk.
